We don't have limits. She has to share the computer with me so has to get off now and then. We don't "hang around" much in the summer. Because I work she is either in summer camp or we are doing something vacationy. So we don't spend tons of time at home doing nothing. But for the odd day when we do nothing I don't worry about it. Yesterday the TV was not turned on until 5:00 I think but she spent alot of time playing Nancy Drew with a friend on the computer Saturday afternoon. It all equals out I think.

I'm a little more lax about the tv and computer limits in the summer but there definitely are limits.

Connor doesn't watch much tv in general. Maybe 2 hours per week on average and that is usually a dvd on the weekends, watched as a family. (Occasionally we will do a movie marathon when the weather is really bad). Television is just not a major part of our lives and the only tv in the house is in a 300 sq ft finished space in our basement that also houses my quilting area.

For the most part our evenings are spent in the living room with dh reading aloud to all of us. I usually knit while he reads. On the weekends, when we have more time, we will engage in a game of cribbage, scrabble or play chess.

We don't allow IM, myspace or computer games so computer time is mostly spent responding to email, doing research or working on a web site. Connor has his own website and he is also webmaster for the Student Historic Preservation Team. I'd say he averages 1-2 hours per week during the summer on the computer.

Placing limitations on computer has never really been a problem for us. We've never really had a need. I think it would be different if we allowed him more casual use of the computer.

I'd say that Connor's total screen time (tv and computer combined) per week is 3 hours on average.

My general view on screen time is that there is so much more to life that it's a waste to spend more in front of a screen without a purpose. (I take exception for school related work and research). We've never put much value in using tv or computers for "entertainment" purposes. Because of that fact, our son has grown up in a home where entertainment didn't include a screen. We maybe see 2 to 4 movies per year in total at the theater. We are more likely to see a play or concert than a movie.

I don’t put limits on computer or tv use, and we don’t have a problem with excessive use. My kids have other activities several times a week, they swim, go to movies, see friends, etc. My dd does use the internet to check her e-mail, and occasionally to im friends in the evening. Other than that, she uses programs like Corel Paint to do artwork, and uses the computer to scan/upload her artwork to an art posting website where she posts them online. She also uses Windows Movie Maker and similar programs to make her own manga-type movies and imports music and uploads them to youtube. And she uses the computer to write stories. Drawing, movie making and writing are her hobbies and passion, I have no problem with her using the computer time this way.

Ds uses the computer to check his e-mail and im friends, and looking at his friends uploads to youtube.

Neither of my kids are really into tv programs. They may watch a movie now and then, but nothing regularly.

So, no limits here :).

I don't have official limits, but I do kick them off of the TV or computer occasionally.

Hannah keeps pretty busy. She doesn't watch much TV. In fact I can't remember the last time she watched a show. She does spend alot of time on limewire and itunes though. From time to time I have to kick her off IM but not that often. I guess the answer to your ? is, no limits here, yet. I.M. and Itunes is her down time.

We're definitely a lot looser in the summertime, my son spends way more time playing games, my daughter loves her silly webkinz and I let them veg out most mornings for a short time on that.

I don't limit screen time, but it's not unlimited screen time, it's more that there's just no need to put a limit on it.

Aly has NEVER been able to just sit & stare at a TV (she gets it from me and from her infancy when I ALWAYS had the TV on for background noise...I have actually outgrown that need...lol). So, that's never a problem.

Computer time...she's usually either playing games that I've approved and/or taking care of her Internet pets (Webkinz & Neopets) or surfing the 'Net for new stuffed animals & other stuff she doesn't need or creating lists of those things on MS Word. When she's playing games, she's hardly sitting still (gets that from me, too....I've had friends ban me from playing Mario on their Nintendo because I'd jerk the controllers around...lol).

Video games...she just doesn't play video games. In fact, I don't think she's picked up the Nintendo DS all summer!

While she'd love to be outside more often, it's either too wet, too hot/humid/high UV, air quality too bad, or too mosquito-y. Our backyard is currently flooded.

She spends ample time reading, writing, & drawing, and she's more active than I can ever wish to be, just not athletic or athletically competitive (again, like me...lol).
