Dentist charge?

How much does your dentist charge for a check-up with x-rays?
I was shocked to have to pay $170 today!
Last visit, I paid $85, with x-rays. They told me it was discounted since I was a new patient. I figured it was discounted maybe 10%???
There has to be cheaper dentists out there!!!
I never paid more than $70 with my previous dentist (unfortunately, he had a heart attack at 50ish and passed away).
Oh, and I don't have insurance, because it would be $92 a month and would only cover a small percent.

Well I just paid $118 for my ds to have a cleaning, floride treatment and exam. He didn't need x-rays this time around. But I don't think that the $170 is too far off the mark. My son has to go every three months for cleanings (because of his orthodontic work) so it adds up fast. We usually try to get the xrays done every other visit, when the insurance pays. (Our insurance only covers visits every six months).

Alysha, it seems like our dentist charges more every time we go.

Thanks everyone.
It was $190 with the fluoride treatment...I didn't add that in because I figured not everyone did that, and I wanted a good comparison. Guess I should've added it.
I haven't called around yet, but I plan to.

I think ours is around the same. I've heard that sometimes pediatric dentists are more expensive. We have one, but I've never shopped around because I like him a lot and so do my kids.
Luckily, I have dental insurance. you could ask how often does she REALLY need xrays? I think mine does them once a year...which i think is enough unless there is a problem going on...like pain or an obvious cavity.
I think xrays every 6 mnths is too much, if that's what he does.
This was actually a dentist for ME.
Aly goes to a pediatric dentist, as well, and even though he/they has/have always been expensive (and is STILL cheaper than this dentist), like you, we love the practice and don't intend on leaving. They usually only do x-rays once/year, but every now & then, they've had to do an additional x-ray on her bottom front teeth (the reason she now has braces is due to a displaced tooth).
I'm not sure how often they do x-rays because this was almost like a one-year visit instead of a 6-month visit. My last visit was scheduled for around the time my MIL passed away and I just couldn't get around to taking the time off to go during the school year after that, and when I called a month and a half ago, it was the best I could get.

I realized that after I posted to you, that I didn't specify in THIS post (I did in the DYK thread) and it looks like almost everyone thought the same thing.
Aly goes Monday. Last visit, it was $149, but that was with x-rays, so I think it should be $115 (including fluoride) this time. They've gone up in the past 7 years, too. Our first visits with x-rays were around the $100 mark, without, around $79-85.
The only charge I've really been miffed at with her dentist was not a regular visit at all. The displaced tooth has been displaced since over a year and a half ago. So, in January, the new tooth was emerging behind and the baby tooth was still there, so she pulled it (actually, it had emerged before the previous July). The dentist (one of the 3 in the practice) wanted to LOOK at its progress in 3 months rather than waiting 6 months. So, we go in, she decides to not even proceed with anything anyway (nothing improved, obviously), and then we were charged $65. *I* could've looked at it myself! Then, we went to another one in the practice in July and he didn't even WANT to do anything about it--said wait until Jan. In Jan, he said to go to an ortho, which we didn't do until May.
