Who knows this site well enough to know if it's virtually totally safe?

My understanding is that they can only say "canned phrases" ?

Know any other good, fun ones as such? besides this and Webkins?

I've never been on either of those sites so I don't really know what they are, but my kids (and me!) have been playing Neopets on and off for a few years now. It seems pretty harmless.

Never used Club Penguin, but Aly uses Webkinz and Neopets. There are some dark areas of Neopets. I warned Aly about it, so she stays away from those. I think bad things happen there to the Neopets and that's enough to keep Aly away.

Hey - could you provide us a little more info: re: dark areas on Neopets?

That's another one my kids use often.....

I don't see that area any more, so maybe they realized they had more of an audience with younger kids and got rid of it. I'll ask Aly when she comes in here. She started playing on Neopets about 3 years ago and that's when I explored it with her.

My kids used to hang out a lot on the Nickelodeon site. The were only allowed to use prewritten phrases there as well.

They have canned phrases, but also now have a chat feature where you type in what you want to say. Go to their website and click on the parents information and take a peek at the tutorial (just takes a few minutes, and you can see towards the end the chat feature). My kids used to go to that website when it didn't have a chat feature.

Both of my kids (10 and 12) go to Club Penguin and have used it for a while. They aren't allowed to use the chat feature and so are stuck with the canned phrases. My kids use the UK site because the US servers are often full when they want to get on.

But I don't think there is any site that is 100% safe. You really have to teach kids internet safety and reinforce the rules frequently. Every time I read about an incident on the net involving a teenager (solicitations, porn, etc.) I have my kids read the article (when appropriate) so they'll know about the dangers of revealing even a tiny bit about yourself, such as where you saw the latest movie or which local restaurants you like.

My daughter likes agirlsworld.com. It costs $12/yr, but I like the fact that it covers a lot of girl pre-teen and teen issues and has as safe a penpal area as I think you can get these days. You can check it out without paying as well.

My kids both have used Club Penguin. My 7-year-old really loves it. To them, it's more about the games than any kind of chatting...

It is worth noting that my friend's 9-year-old was "propositioned" inappropriately on Webkinz (chat area).
