I am not a smoker and did not smoke as a tween/teen. I tried a puff once from a friend, choked on it, and never attempted again. I get very ill in the presence of smokers. It has never been allowed in my house and no one has questioned me on that...they just go outside (actually, I communicate with very few smokers now).
Aly is more allergic than I am to smoking, so I hope she has the common sense to stay away from trying, but if not, there will be serious consequences. I will not tolerate it. It's as bad as underage drinking and illegal drugs as far as I'm concerned. She has been burned by a cigarette twice (once by an aunt and once walking at the state fair), she stays away whenever she can see one.
Louisiana passed a no-smoking act last year and you can't even smoke in restaurants any more. I LOVE IT!!! It means we get to go to places that we weren't able to before because the smoke was SO bad. At a kids' fest expo, she was offered a piece of gum by the booth that was promoting this law. She can't have gum because of her braces, so she said, "No, thank you" and I explained why. The lady instead gave her a t-shirt...she wears it proudly.
One of her best friends...sweet girl, lives with her grandma (sweet lady). But she smokes so bad that you can smell it in her YARD! I would love for Aly to spend more time with the little girl, but it can't be at her house.
My one cousin who grew up in the household with both my aunt and uncle smoking 2 packs a day tells stories about how when she was in highschool she would actually get nicotine withdrawl headaches and have to go to her locker and inhale the smell on her jacket that was so strong it would give her a boost. The sad part it is her parents thought it was funny, I was horrified.
Tam took the words right out of my mouth. I never smoked, never will. Can you believe I work with respiratory therapists who SMOKE?! My girls are totally "grossed out" by smoking...I have made them totally anti-smoking. When they see someone smoking, they always point it out and say it looks bad and they smell it and can't stand teh smell. I think Ca. is one state with the toughest anti-smoking laws, aren't we? I'm glad!! Restaurants are not separated into non or smoking sections, there is no smoking.
I'm not a smoker, didn't smoke as a tween/teen, and the closest I came to smoking was holding a cigarette. And thought that was nasty enough (I just find the whole thing repulsive...a hot cigarette with icky smelling smoke blowing around, being held in your hand and inhailed into your lungs. The smoke stinks, the smokers hair and clothing smell of cigarettes, and their smokers breath is unpleasant)!
I think teens who smoke are starting on an unhealthy habit that can be very difficult to halt. Why start? Perhaps if their biology teachers would bring in the lung specimens like my biology teacher did it would make an impression on some of the kids. My teacher brought in two specimens - a smokers lung and a non-smokers lung. The smokers lung was dark...reminded me of a BBQ'd meat.
Or do you feel this is wrong and you will do what you can to make sure they don't smoke?>
This is an issue I would fight. We've talked about smoking for years, I've showed my kids smokers lungs on the internet, they don't like the smell of cigarettes, and both have allergies (my son has asthma) which wouldn't mix well at all with smoking. It's a health issue.

I don't smoke and I really don't care to be around people that smoke.
First of all, are you a smoker?
Can you believe I work with respiratory therapists who SMOKE?!

I am a smoker.
I had my first cigarette at the age of 9.
I smoked through high school. We students actually had a smoking area for us to use.
I feel teens should never smoke. If my kids smoke I will be very upset. I have told them it a hundred times. Right now they hate it!
If I find out they are smoking I will probably freak out, maybe even take them to a hospital and show them what can happen.
