GADGETS GADGETS GADGETS GADGETS GADGETS GADGETS

We live in a society where our kids think they need to have all the latest and greatest electronics and gadgets--and let's face it, they are pretty cool!

So what new "gadgets" or electronics are your 10-14 year olds asking for this holiday season and what are your thoughts on them needing all the latest and greatest gadgets.

Jordyn has been asking for MONTHS for a new cell phone, one that she can text more easily since ALL her friends have new ones and one that she can receive photos on.

She hasn't asked for any this year. She has a cell phone which she rarely uses (granted it won't hold a charge very well), she has an MP3 player (not an ipod) that she uses once a month max, she has no interest in a video game system and sneered when I mentioned something about a Wii. So she really hasn't asked for that. She wants some clothes, a moon chair, some DVD games for the TV and a couple of movies but she hasn't asked for any big items this year.

Evan really wants a new phone. I don't blame him because the phone he has now is one of those that only dials pre-programmed numbers. He's up for a new one under our plan in February or March so he's just going to have to wait. I'm not going to pay for a new one now when he can get one free in two months. We have a Wii so he's got lots of games on his list (we only had Wii sports and Shrek III until this weekend when he got two new games for his birthday). He's also young enough (11) that he still enjoys remote controlled stuff so he's got a few of those on his list.

He also wants a new nano because he really wants the video capability. Sorry Charlie, you've got one that's just a year old and works perfectly fine. You'll have to save up for the new one on your own. I just don't think it helps them out later in life to give them the latest and greatest all the time. Delayed gratification and money management are important life lessons (I personally am still working on this one :) )

I'm guilty of indulging. Hannah is wanting a video ipod. We bought her a nano for Christmas last year. Apple comes out with something new every year. There is no way we could keep up. DH says, no on the video ipod. I say, yes. We're at a stand still, lol :) He thinks Nano will come out with a bigger hard drive/whatever for the nano video ipod next year. Right now, I think the Nano video ipod is 8g. The classic video ipod is 60 or 80g. Big difference. :)

We got the video ipod for dd last year, she uses it ALL the time. Now she wants one of the new ipods because they are "so cute" but she's not getting it.

the thing she is begging (literally) for, in fact her letter to santa could be a Verizon commercial and she even told Santa the ONLY thing she wants is the new Juke cellphone.

I should add to my post that she got a wii for getting good grades last year and she got a digital camera for her birthday. oh and She has a Razr phone. So far she hasn't asked for a new cell phone. :)

I think DH is buying her a few wii games for Christmas. Or maybe they are for him to play.
