Kids, homework, and current events...

Do you filter or limit your children's access to current events, news web sites, papers, etc? Do you know any good tween level news sites? Each week Evan has to answer the who, what, when, where, why, and how for a world, national, sports, and entertainment story. In the process of finding these stories and doing his homework, he's coming across stories I would rather he not be exposed to. Granted he's pretty mature for 11 and the more horrific stories (i.e. Baby Riley) bother him but don't seem to "haunt" him or traumatize him - but I just don't see the need for him to be exposed to this. I think it desensitizes people to hear so much disturbing news. Any thoughts on this? Suggestions on where he might go to complete this homework? I already make him choose positive stories and rotate through different media (computer, news, paper, tv, and the Wii news channel).
I even limit my own exposure to news these days...

I'm trying to get Connor to listen to more NPR news than any other news source.

Honestly, I don't.
I don't filter the news from my kids.
