OT- gift certificate for dinner

hi there
need some advice..
would like to buy a gift certificate for a woman who drives my dd to school with her daughter for the holidays.
she never wants to take any money for gas.. so i thought of a dinner gift certificate for her & her husband at their favorite sushi restaurant.
i don't eat sushi and have NO idea how much to give for a nice dinner for 2 (never did this before..)
Any suggestions would be great. We live in the NY area, to give you an idea of possible prices... have no idea... but would like to be generous without going overboard...
Thanks.

I have never eaten sushi so I really don't know.. but wanted to say that's a nice thought :)
I would say $40, about $20 each. That's not going to be a "fancy" dinner with tons of wine or sake, but that should cover a dinner for two. If you want to be generous $50. But if its their fave restaurant they'd probably be happy to receive $25. If you can go out for dinner and reduce your bill by more than half its a bonus. Lets you go out for dinner twice for the same price. I'm sure any amount would be appreciate. You could also phone the restaurant and ask for an estimate of dinner for two without alcohol (that's usually what jacks the price up). I'm sure they could give you a ballpark figure.
Its a lovely thought.

thank you for your reply..
and yes, i would agree with you about the dinner part..
it's just that i really wanted to Say THANK YOU -in a big way.
the women (and her husband) are really great for picking up my daughter for school ( yes, it is on the way to school - we don;t get a bus too close - but too far for a 13 year to walk by herself and i am leaving at 7 am for work.) so, for me - i guess i wanted to let them know how much i appreciate them.
i don;t want them to feel cheated... or the fact that they know.. i could have paid alot more on a private service - if not for them.
thanks again...
and I lOVE Benihanna too... and i would take a 50 gift card for dinner there anytime too!!!
What a sweet idea! I'd say give the amount that you want to give.
Sushi is very expensive, so if you want to cover the cost of the whole meal, check out a menu from the restaurant they love and add up the cost of several items. DH and I usually order 4 maki (sushi rolls) each. If you get sashimi or sushi (not rolled), it can add up to more $ because they are smaller and you usually need to order more of them. If they drink alcohol, you can add in the cost of 1 or 2 drinks.
But I agree with the others that you don't have to cover a meal. It's enough that you're going to the trouble of finding something they'll really love, and if they are so generous they refuse gas money, they'll probably really appreciate any gift card!
