QOTW: Our board question of the week is regarding parent involvement in homework!
How involved are you in your child's daily homework?

This is going to be quick as I need to get back to work, but I believe when kidlets are younger they need more parental involvement...as they progress to middle school they need to be more independent & start getting into habits that they'll be taking to HS & college. I try to be more hands off but its hard esp when I look online & see that Rach has gotten 0s on homework...I'll ask whassup w/that...did we do it & not turn in or just not do it?
When she calls me at work
I am involved in the sense that I remind her and nag if necessary (I was the ultimate nag over the weekend). I offer advice if asked but I don't tell her exactly what to do. I might offer suggestions "Why don't you put a tree on the left to fill in the space" but I won't tell her the exact content of what she should be doing. While I think kids have to take some responsiblity, i.e. writing down homework, actually bringing it home and taking it back, I think parents still have to be involved. They don't have adult brains. They can come home and get doing something and totally forget they even had homework. Not purposely, its just escapes their brain. If they were completely capable of functioning on their own I figure they'd be able to move out, get a job, get married and do everything else an adult can do. My job is to teach and guide. That means reminding them about things until it becomes a habit. Lots of adults still forget things so I would not expect my 12 year old to be faultless.
We do not have the on-line systems that many American schools do. So I simply ask is she has homework and I have to trust her to tell me yes or no. Then I might remind at 7:00 "You have homework, you should start soon" and that's about it. I do help with math sometimes when she doesn't get a concept but I don't proofread her work much anymore or check math or that sort of thing. For projects I do a bit more in the offering advice, but its up to her to take it or not. If she wants to print it in blue and pink and I think red and yellow would be better that's her choice.
With both of my kids (freshman and 6th grader), I only get involved if it looks like they aren't doing any ... EVER!
I LOVE that I can check her homework grades online....and more than catching her mess something up I've more often caught teachers simple errors (like giving a 9% instead of a 96%) and have her bring it up to them.
Oh what a timely question!
We moved to Maine two years ago from Minnesota.

Since I have to sign her planner I always know what she has to do.
When she writes a paper I will proof it for her,I also will have her change an ink color when she write teh whole paper in yellow since I can't see yellow too well on the paper.
I will also have her make the font size bigger if it is smaller than 12,I have older eyes and if I have to squint to read it I figure the teacher may.
For projects I will get her what she needs and help her with lettering if she ask me too.
As for math i am pretty much out,if she does not understand something.
I will check her work if I understand with a calulaer and she wants me to check it.
For
K-4th grade I was extremely hands on with homework.
I dont' get involved in Kayleigh's homework anymore.
