11 yr old son and period info?

I am looking for some advice on explaining to my son what periods are. He thinks tampons and pads are for bladder control and therefor I have some serious bladder issues! I know as a good mama I need to beable to teach him this. Some ideas? Is there a site, maybe, where I could print something out for him to read and then talk about it? Thank you, thank you, thank you!

WHy does he need to know?? I mean it is a natural part of a womens life, not a mans, so therefore I don't think it is necessary for him to know the details till he is older.
If he asks, you say the pads & tampons are for females to use for female things and leave it at that!

I agree.
Not sure what grade your son is in, but DD got the "puberty lesson" in fifth grade, and menstruation was covered.
I would just tell him the truth.
Of course he needs to know, if only so he will understand that his female classmates will soon be going through body changes just as he and his male friends will. Skip the books, because this is a really simple thing to explain, and do it yourself or have his dad do it, if he is available.
We told our 11 year old son something like this: "When a girl's body starts to mature, an organ inside her called the uterus begins the preparations to have a baby. Every month, the uterus builds up a lining just in case she becomes pregnant. When she does not, the uterus sheds that lining each month. This monthly shedding is called a period or menstruation. It's a painless bleeding. When this perfectly normal bleeding occurs, the girl or woman needs to catch the blood with pads or tampons (hold them up here for him to see) so that it won't ruin her clothes. Any questions?"
