I've been thinking about this a lot lately.

First, what is parkour? :)

I agree with what you're saying and like everything, there are levels. Overall with my clients, I am for functional fitness but when I have someone long term, there's no way to avoid doing isolation/motion specific stuff. I do think that my programs for my in-home clients tend to be better suited to real world application because I don't have the "luxury" of machines and dedicated space. I have to get creative and often times, things I come up with mimic movements that happen in real life. For example, I often pair a standing exercise with a floor exercise. Clients are usually not fond of getting up and down repeatedly but I usually hear something about how they've noticed getting up is so much easier than it used to be.

That being said, even though I work out at home, my workouts are essentially gym-workouts. I do cardio on the elliptical and I watch my trashy TV while doing so. :) While I do love the idea of getting out there and doing what you love, I think it's a matter of convenience and possibility. I make it as easy as possible for myself to work out.

I really want to try out the P90X dvds. If you try them out, let us know. I'd love to hear more about them. I still put those in the "working out for working out" category over the "physical activity for the fun of it and hey, I'm getting in shape, too!"

Occasionally, I like doing an exercise for the sake of doing it. (Push-ups, probably not... but there are other things)

I have to think about this more to see if there's an exercise I like to do for the sake of it.

LOL, I did notice that everyone in those shots looks young (and male--are they all males?).

As I was typing this, I remembered having this conversation with Jen, probably years ago, about this.

Hey Jean, We have a group doing P90X if you want to drop by and ask them some questions about it. I know several people IRL who are doing it and really feel they're getting their money's worth out of it (it's a rather pricey DVD series). The only downside I've heard from most is the amount of time it takes each week.
