Hey, I should have read the whole thread before I posted. You scooped me with my own prior comments.
Strong chest is required for a lot of things. Dancing and ice skating lifts (for the male partner). "Handstand" type tricks in skateboarding, parkour, freestyle bmx, etc. Also surfing, yoga, gymnastics (again mostly for males). But you are right that it is most important just for functional fitness in every day life, and it would be hard to work enough through most active pursuits.
