I would agree with Jean.

It's hard to pinpoint the chemistry. I like instructors cuing but also if there's too much cuing (why does that word look so funny, should it be cueing, which also looks wrong?) and instruction, it drives me crazy, too. I've been told I instruct too much but I have to say I'm pretty paranoid about the BOSU and making sure everyone has proper technique because I've seen injuries with it. There isn't a one size fits all instructor, either. There's an instructor at my home gym who is really popular there. Her classes aren't too hard and she chats a lot. But, she recently gave up a class at the sister gym because no one comes to her class there--it's been that way for over 15 years. She's not dynamic which works great for an older population (I'm meaning 40+) but not for young people who want movement and enthusiasm.

Yeah, and even when it comes to choreography, I had an instructor once who had a lot of energy and gave a great class and we thought it was, in part, her choreography. But, someone else subbed and had used some of her choreography and it just wasn't the same. Energy has a lot to do with it for me, and comfort with that movement. As I was saying before with my friend who is now teaching Zumba and does a very suburban mom class, I find her movement awkward so don't like it but enough suburban moms do and they come to her class. If it were that easy to pinpoint then we'd all be excellent instructors!

Yeah, funny, but there is one primadonna instructor who is "the talk of the gym" because she is divorcing her husband and having an affair with one of the gym employees...anyways, she does dance classes but can't get ANY of the gymrat regulars to her class because she is such a snob.

We have instructors like that, too. As the director said to me (in private), "Does the word 'diva" come to mind?" Yeah.

Wow, lots of great ideas. I guess there are a lot more factors that go into making a good fitness instructor than what I've thought of! Chemistry is so true though... because I go to this one cycling class half just for the fact that the instructor is hilariously funny and sarcastic which I love. She also kicks our butts which is great of course :). All these ideas will really help me! Thanks! (and keep 'em coming :)...)

Yeah, that's exactly what we're talking about--chemistry is hard to describe. I had the best spinning instructor but he said the same thing all the time, "Push, push, you can do it" and things like that. But, he was so motivating and the class was so much fun. People literally had to be there an hour in advance to get a bike. And, it can be person specific. My friend did not like one spinning instructor at her gym but her husband loved him. I think a big part of an instructor's popularity is the enthusiasm and how much fun he/she seems like they're having. Are you thinking of becoming an instructor?

Well, I'm currently studying to get my personal training certification from ACSM and hope to do some online custom fitness plans in the near future (I currently have a blog and Facebook page type thing), but also hope to teach some outdoor bootcamp type classes in the Summer, so that's one reason I was interested.
