School lunch costs

Has anyone ever compared the cost of bringing lunch to school vs: buying? I am so tired of making lunches. My girls are going in to 7th and 9th grade, so I've been making lunches for too long! They help (sometimes) with making them, but sometimes buying lunch sounds so much better.
What do you do about lunches?

It's very close to $2 a school lunch here. You can
make a lot of peanut butter sandwiches for that.
I do let her look at the school lunch menu and
pick one meal a week to buy hot. She buys milk
each day.

I am sure its much cheaper and most likely healthier to make lunches at home.

At the end of last year, my kids got in the habit of buying lunches. This year they are $1.75 each so I am not sure what we will do. To start with I am sure we will pack, but we always toss in some purchased lunches as well.

Alexis (entering 7th) packed a lot of her own last year..and I suspect she will do it again this year, as will Caleb (entering 4th).

I envy you guys with the option. We have no choice here and I would GLADLY pay for her to have lunch at school. I too am sick of making lunches but I make them for myself so seems stupid for both of us to be in the kitchen trying to do the same thing. We can't take peanutbutter sandwiches and my DD HATES sandwiches as a general rule anyway. She likes egg rolls (well, its about $8 for a box which gets her about 4 lunches - so not cheap). She also got last year to that very self conscious stage. She won't eat anything that makes too much noise or that could draw attention to her eating. ARGGHH!!! I understand at her age they are very concerned about that stuff but it makes me crazy. She will take the odd luncheon meat on a roll, maybe a wrap of some kind but its a challenge. She is sick of pizza too so doesn't even sign up for pizza Fridays anymore. Oh well, life goes on. If I send her egg rolls, a juice box and a pudding, that would be about $3. Certainly not cheap so $1.75 seems cheap although not sure what quality that is. If its all chicken nuggets and fries then I'd rather she not.

My kids bought lunches all last year. The junior high school price is $2.05 and the elementary school is $1.65. When I stayed home I packed their lunches 2-3 times a week and they bought the other days. This year though, we may need to do something different. I don't foresee us spending $115 a month this year though. To think of it, Isaiah spends about $3 a day because he buys a lunch AND items from the ala carte menu. That kids needs a JOB. LOL

I never really compared the cost difference, but for my son I think buying a lunch would be cheaper. The lunches are now $2.75.
