Hello,
I was just wondering how many of your 10 - 14 year olds have cell phones?
At what age did you get them one?
How responsible are they with the phones?
Do you pay a fortune for them?
What is the school Policy for Phones?
Are you thinking of getting a phone for your 10 - 14 yr old?
If not, Why not?

We do not have one for our 10 year old, Although our 8 year old asked for one for her next birthday.
At what age did you get them one?
She does not have one, but I would like to wait till 15 or 16 to get her one.
How responsible are they with the phones?
My DD loses her socks if they arent on her feet!!
Do you pay a fortune for them?
I pay a fortune for mine and DH's, I cant imagine adding another person
What is the school Policy for Phones?
In elementry, they cant have phones. I dont know about middle school
Are you thinking of getting a phone for your 10 - 14 yr old?
NO!
If not, Why not?
My niece got one for her 10th birthday last year, and She doesnt even use it. She plays the games. When she got hers I told DD, I will not buy you a phone till you are older, besides.. who do you have to talk to, and what ever you have to talk about isnt that important. Maybe not the best answer.. but She is only 10, and has like 2 real friends! But besides that, I just dont think DD is responsible enough to manage talk time.

I was just wondering how many of your 10 - 14 year olds have cell phones? My 11-year-old DD has one.
At what age did you get them one? We got her one at age 9 because of her schedule. She is in theatre and part of a local touring group. The pick-up times aren't always cut and dry. It's really helpful now she is in middle school,
I was just wondering how many of your 10 - 14 year olds have cell phones? Mitch will be 13 in November and he finally got one.
At what age did you get them one? Just got it this month. We always told him "You'll get a cell phone when WE need you to have a cell phone," and we finally have reached that point. I love being able to instantly get a hold of him while he is out and about, and also now that he is (hopefully) going to be on the Middle School soccer team, it will come in great handy for him to be able to reach us when practices end or if there are delays getting back from away games, etc.
How responsible are they with the phones? So far, very, but it has only been 2 weeks, LOL. We made him sign a "contract" stating that if he breaks or loses it, it's up to him to replace it.
Do you pay a fortune for them? Nope, he paid for the phone with his own money. At first we thought it was going to cost us $30/month to add him, which is why we waited so long; but DH made some changes to his plan and that brought it down to $10/month to add an extra phone.
What is the school Policy for Phones? They are not allowed in school. I think they are allowed to keep them in the locker, off, if they need them for after school activities.
At what age did you get them one? She was 10.5
How responsible are they with the phones? Very, she's never used it beyond what she's supposed to.
Do you pay a fortune for them? I pay about $70/month for the family plan.
What is the school Policy for Phones? They have to be off and in lockers/bags.
Are you thinking of getting a phone for your 10 - 14 yr old? She'll be getting a new one this fall. The battery won't stay charged in this one and my contract is up in October so I'm thinking about changing providers as she wants one of the phones with a keyboard and my current provider has really boring phones (even from my old lady perspective).

~My 12 year old has one. He got it when he was 10. My 11 year old doesn't have one because she is VERY forgetful and is pretty irresponsible. LOL! My 10 year old is getting one before the school year starts.
At what age did you get them one?
~ Oops...see above
How responsible are they with the phones?
~ My 12 year is responsible. He hasn't lost it ever. He misplaces it around the house though. LOL! My 10 year is UBER responsible with his valuables so that's why he is getting one.
Do you pay a fortune for them?
~ Not at all. I normally get the one that comes free. Isaiah has an iPhone but that was because his cousin gave it to him as he had one already but he also won one at his job. Which means that Julian will get Isaiah's razor.
What is the school Policy for Phones?
~ They are allowed to have them as long they stay in their locker for junior high and backpack for elementary.

My kids are 10 and 14, and neither has a phone of their own. We have a family phone that they can borrow if they are going to be somewhere that they will need it, but quite frankly that is very very rare. My kids are always with trusted adults and/or within reach of a phone they can use anytime they like, so it isn't an issue. I love cell phones, and have one of my own, but I think that kids now think it is something owed to them, that they HAVE to have, and that's just silly IMO. Phones are tools, and they have one to use when they need it.
My kids are also not allowed to text. None of their friends text either (or very few), so it isn't an issue. The homeschool community is really very different, I think, particularly about issues like this, they have many close friends and none of them carry cell phones.

My 12 year old has a cell phone, my 10 year old does not.
At what age did you get them one?
She got it for Christmas when she was 2 weeks shy of turning 12
How responsible are they with the phones?
She is very responsible, but she is also a perfectionist .... and a little bit "anal" so to speak
Do you pay a fortune for them?
the phone itself was $20...I pay $15 a month for her to be on our plan...that includes $5 for 400 text messages, which she gets in exchange for doing chores
What is the school Policy for Phones?
They cannot be on during school hours
Are you thinking of getting a phone for your 10 - 14 yr old?
My 10 year old wants one and should have one because she will be walking home from school....but she is not very responsible, we are still thinking about it.
