Know anything about mattresses?

My daughter's mattress is old and she'd like to get something "squishier." I always thought that harder mattresses were best--my own feels like a slab at the morgue--but is this true for kids and teens as well? Anyone know anything about how mattress firmness affects posture, development, etc?

And I haven't shopped for a mattress in years. How do I not get ripped off?

I do think hard mattresses are better for the back, but a good compromise is to get a firm mattress with a nice soft pillowtop on it, that way it feels squishy but gives the right support.

I agree with Nancy. Firm with a pillow top. We just bought a new mattress and opted for a Simmons Beautyrest - firm with a foam pillow top. We LOVE it. We call it our vacation bed. As we have a queen size bed it was pricey but we caught a Labor Day sale so we got it for about 40% off. Oh, the pillow tops can be a little warm so ask about which pillow top is the coolest. Some of them are made with latex if latex allergies are a consideration, be sure to ask.

HTH - sorry I couldn't give you any information about development, posture, etc.

If you have any more questions, I'll be happy to try to answer them...

When we replaced ds's mattress a few years ago, our chiropractor said to make sure we got a firm mattress for him.

It depends on what size you are getting here.

Thanks, all! She has a double bed, so we should have lots of options. We'll search for a firm base with a pillow-top (I'd like one of those for myself, but our mattress is still in good shape!)

How about a waveless waterbed. I really miss mine, I always woke up well rested w/no aches & pains. We just bought another new mattress w/a pillow top & its still not all that comfortable. Its not a yr. old yet & its sagging on dh side & it was an expensive one. I wish every night for my waterbed.

i just bought a new memory foam mattress 10 inch. I love it... changed the box springs as well what a difference. I have a king size though but I do know they make them for double beds. it was a nice price too. I ordered it off line. not that expensive.

A waterbed sounds interesting, but I don't think our 200 year old floor joists could handle the weight! Do you mind my asking what brand of mattress you have that you don't like? These things are so expensive I don't want to make a mistake and buy something that gives her back aches.

Its a Vera Wang Posturepedic I think its made by Sealy. Your house sounds like mine & I bet those old floor joists would hold up better than a new house unless the new house was on a concrete slab.

Thanks--I'm actually going to ask her how she feels about a waterbed. I have heard they are better for your back. Years ago, I had a friend with scoliosis whose doctor actually prescribed one.
