How do your kids feel about getting them? My DD is going next Thursday for her eval, has known all along that she needs them because her dentist told her (plus I had them, her older sister had them) and she is scared to death! I know she is a scaredy cat in general but I don't know what more to say to help assauge her fears. I suspect (and I think she does) that a tooth will need to be pulled to make way. Any ideas?
Our ortho likes to start young because she can have the kids wear a jaw expander which means they'd have room for the permanent teeth to come in and less pulling later on.
DS8 had a removable appliance that he didn't like to wear so will go next month to get an appliance that is cemented in to expand his jaw. The expansion is done gradually, but with the temporary device, if the kid doesn't wear it even a couple days, the expansion that occured goes away!
DS11 needed many teeth pulled because his jaw is as big as it's going to get. He was excited about getting braces so the pulled teeth he actually didn't mind so much.
The fear factor - I think it might depend on what their friends are saying. DS11's friends told him it didn't hurt getting them put on, just when they came off, so he didn't have any anxiety, just excitement. DS found out they were wrong as he was sore for about a week when he first got them on. DS is also really geeked to se all the spaces in his top front teeth closing up
Evan had an evaluation about 3 years ago but hasn't lost all his permanent teeth yet (he has 1 left I think) so we go back every 6 months to get his mouth checked. He actually can't wait to get braces because as he puts it "I don't want to go to prom wearing braces." He hasn't even expressed interest in girls yet. Hee hee and whew!! I personally can wait because we can't afford the extra expense right now. Our dentist told me at about age 6 to start an orthodontia fund! :s Not that we did but at least we knew it was coming.
Hope things go well at the eval. Does he know any older kids who have been through the whole process? Maybe they could share their experience from "the other side of the fence."
My son Andrew just had his evaluation....and he needs major stuff done..LOL
