Hi,
Is anyone here a personal trainer? I am seriously considering studying to get my certification, and would love to chat someone up about the job.

Thanks!

Yeah, you have much more leeway working out of the house as certifications go. As long as you make them work, most people don't care!

True that-nobody even asks me what cert I have-lol. They want to know if I'm like Jillian Michaels. (I tell them, only if they are like the contestants on Biggest Loser)

I am working right now, but only have 2 clients due to the financial issues here in NY. I work "In gym" training, but am not employed by the gym. I have 4 kids, and one is just 3, so I couldn't put much more time in anyway!

Speaking of which-someone has a nursery school to go to, and I have a dog that needs a good run.

There are a lot of good certifications out there and many more rigorous than ACE or some of the more recognized.

How about the NSCA? That's what I am certified through.

That's too bad.

The "worst" trainers were all certified by AFAA and they did the weekend boot-camp type thing.

Kel's covered a lot of the information.

What did you hear unfavorably about AFAA? I had considered it because my group fitness is through them and they're well regarded in that cert but was encouraged by quite a few people to go with ACE instead.

Different certifications are differently respected (some are really tough courses, others are weekend bootcamps that a monkey could do).

What is the difference in ACE and other certifications? I recently heard of the National Institute...of personal training? Not sure if that last part is right. I know someone who has the books and needs to get rid of them; he'll sell them to me for $50. I'm job hunting at the moment. What I truly want to do is Outward Bound. I'm not sure if personal training would be a stepping stone or a waste of money. I hear the money is good, and I would be able to help people which is the ONLY thing I want to do in life. Do you set your own hours, your own employer or work for a gym? The gym I go to has trainers that seem to be all for one company, Professional Fitness..can't figure out how they are employed by the gym though. I'm not business minded so being self-employed worries me when it comes to health insurance..stuff like that- I have no idea how that works.
I know a test is in November, but I have to take 2 classes to finish up my degree as well. How much time do you suggest I give myself to study? I've been considering this for a while, but I don't want to get stuck in something and then what I really want slip by.

Thanks!
sarah
