jacqui, which parts of the thanksgiving meal are you most worried about? which foods, i mean. maybe you can pick one or two that you will "sample" only -- just a bite or two. then pick a couple that you could make an la-friendly version of . . . or start a new tradition, and make a couple of new dishes that are la-friendly. many of the old "standards" can be incorporated into your meal plan -- at least for that 1 day.

dressing -- have 1/3 cup and let that be it.
turkey -- maybe save some extra protein portion (1/2), so you can really load up on the turkey
cranberry sauce -- count as a fruit, have the real berry kind, if possible. i have a great recipe i will share soon for cinnamon-orange infused cran sauce -- yum!
pumpkin pie -- have just the filling and count as a fruit (i think i'll make a crustless version this year personally)

yes, you'll end up getting a bit more sugar and fat in the meal that you typically would on la, but as long as you keep an eye on your portions, you'll be fine! then add in an extra cardio session friday morning. and you will definitely not get off track.

best,
mel

Thanks for the tips, Mel! Maybe as it gets a bit closer some of you seasoned veterans could start a post giving tips to all of us "first timers" through the holiday meals? My weakness is the starch... I love mashed potatoes and gravy, the stuffing, the fresh baked bread, the cranberries (really, a fruit?). Turkey has always been optional for me, but I am getting used to the increased protein, so maybe things will be a bit easier. I'll be sure to up my cardio that entire week to sort of head things off, too!

Evening Wren!

I'm having Thanksgiving at my house. That's "our" holiday. That way both my family and my husbands' family can come over and we're not traveling to two separate dinners. And last year we were in the process of remodeling and moving so we didn't end up having Thanksgiving at all :( This will be the first holiday without my mom, so I do want to make it special. We'll be having 15-20 people over, so all the food leaves with them and Friday is a new day. I like your idea of just a teaspoon of everything. And I could pass on the rolls as long as I can have a drop of gravy on my mashed potato. Deal!

DH went through with his lawn sweeper and gathered up all the leaves. There's really just up next to the house to do. Hopefully I'll get to it tomorrow. We still have one tree that has just barely changed its leaves. Why can't they all cooperate and drop those things at the same time?

I had grilled chicken wrapped in lettuce for dinner tonight. Yummy! I added some cucumbers and green pepper slivers in it too. The chicken was still juicy enough that it didn't need anything else at all. Although when I sat down to read your post I thought that a shot of hot sauce would've been yumm-o on it.

Hope you have a good rest of the weekend. Nite!

thanks for the info, wren. my wasa must be the light variety, too. 20 calories per piece. very filling! great with soups or just a touch of sf jam!

the hot sauce obviously works great for you, so i would not change a thing. i like it too myself, but have to go easy on it. i can rarely have just a dash here or there -- i use a *lot* when i use it, so the sodium does start to get to me. i settle for a bit of salsa sometimes instead to fill the spicy craving! i love salsa on the eggs, for instance.

the spinach salads sound terrific. i look forward to adding them back in, but have a little fear of doing so after the spinach scare . . . .

well, good night!
