It's not fair... I eat healthy and exercise at least 5 days a week and I DONT lose weight. I can't stand it when people just eat whatever they want and I have to be so meticulous so I don't gain one freaking pound! So I'm sitting around crying and just wanting to eat whatever I want but stop myself because I will just get bigger and bigger!! I'm just not happy with myself. ALL that I want is to be happy with myself. I just want to lose 20 pounds, why is that so hard? I'm so discouraged. I'm just realizing that I'm going to have to be happy at 160 pounds, it's not going to get any better. And I'm not even going to be able to sit around, but I'm going to have to work to maintain this weight. AHHHHH!!!

Yeah I hate those ppl too, I know what you mean. As for trying to lose I think it sounds like you watch your diet closely maybe there are a couple of little things you could look to cut out, change from mayo to low fat miracle whip, cut out liquid calories, etc, I know you've probably done that though. what kind of exercise are you doing? You can do it!! Please dont' dispare this is great place for advice and support.

I don't drink any calorie filled drinks... only water and the occasional diet soda (oh and milk sometimes, but usually with cereal). I don't even use mayo or other condiments. I don't eat much white flour (only whole grains). Exercises... yoga, pilates, tae-bo, swimming. I can't do as much as I used to because I'm getting over mono, but I'm still burning calories! Thanks for your support- maybe I'm just meant to be 20 pounds overweight :(

You might want to think about going to your doctor to get checked out cos it might be something with your thyroid. Dont give up please!!! It'll happen, time is everything and I know it sucks when you work out and eat right and do everything right and see no results. I wish that we could go to the store and just buy a perfect body in a can but its not that way so we gotta deal with what God gave us the only thing we can do is perfect it a little more :) Goodluck!

Have you heard about the "Drink three glasses of milk a day" campaign? Supposedly, "they" did some research, and people who had three servings of dairy every day lost more weight. Skim, or 1% milk being the best option there. After my son was born, I was drinking milk like crazy, and lost ten pounds of baby weight before I even knew what was going on. I don't know if there's a connection, but it seemed like it. My sister also tried and swore she lost some. It's worth a shot!

I'm in the exact same boat, I see people at work scarfing down pizza and cake while I eat my tiny salad just to keep from gaining weight, and losing requires a herculean effort like working out for several hours a day and eating next to nothing. I have a couple ideas for you...you may want to have a BodyGem test done (many gyms have these) to determine your personal metabolism. It is a machine you breathe into, and it will tell you exactly what your basal metabolic rate is. I was going by all those formulas and standard ideas nutrionists have, and they were way too high for me. The BodyGem showed my BMR at 1,060 calories, no wonder I was gaining eating 1,600 - 1,800. Now I eat closer to 1,400 to maintain. I've just accepted that my genetic code stinks, it's like a disease I have to fight. Secondly, get a thryoid test. Mine was also out of whack and that doesn't help. Third, this is radical, but try a low-carb diet. Yes, it may be a "fad" but if you've tried every other kind of diet (like I did) if may help. I was stuck at the same weight for years even though I was eating the right things and running 3-4 miles 4 days a week. I decided to try Atkins for a month and it was the first time EVER I saw the scale move more than a pound or two without totally and completely starving. But you have to be strict about it for the first month or so. I slowly incorporated more whole-grain carbs and didn't gain the weight back. Third, try breaking up your exercise sessions into 2 per day if possible, rather than one long session. I'll go out for a 20 minute jog first thing in the morning, then head to the gym for strength training (very important) and another 20 minutes or so of cardio after that.

I've just finished reading Intuitve Eating and I'm never going to diet again- ever. It feels absolutely wonderful. I just wanted to let everyone know that I'm through!

Hey -
Its nice to finally meet someone that is in the same boat as me. Your first post actually looks a lot like the e-mails I send to my sister! I workout every morning before work and really watch what I eat. The scale hasn't budged in a while. On a typical day, I would have fruit/fat free yogurt for breakfast, a salad with turkey and plain vinegar dressing and for dinner I would have a lot of vegetables and then a small bit of protein. Any snacking was usually fruit and I didn't deviate all that much from the plan.
I was really down and my friend gave me her fat flush book. I am not the biggest fan of fad diets (even though I have tried the South Beach) but I thought I might give it a try. I started reading the book and looking at what I had been eating. I'm not a nutritionist, but my self diagnosis was that I hadnt been eating enough...and I hadn't been eating enough fat.
It was really tough to start adding fat into my diet. I figured that the woman who wrote the book had tried this plan on a number of her clients and that it wouldn't hurt to give it a shot. I'm not saying I have "flushed" 15 pounds a fat like some of the people in the book, but I also don't think I have 15 to lose. It did however start moving the scale and that made me feel a lot better.

Sorry that was so long, I guess I just had a lot to say since I know how you feel! Hope it helps a little!

I am so glad that I found this post. I havn't been on iVillage for some time...but the frustration I felt this evening drove me here to say exactly the same thing you are saying. I've been monitering my intake of calories carefully. I counted every one. And I've found that I am seriously UNDER-eating. Like, less than 1,000 calories a day. For a while, the weight fell off. But in the past month - nothing! I work out, I am active at my job. I'm a vegetarian. I eat what I lovingly refer to as "hippie-chow," a meal plan that consists mostly of whole grains, cheese, fruits and veggies. I gave up soda - my last vice. And still, no more weight loss. I'm still at around 190. I can't be done losing weight already! What to do, what to do?!
