Working out and gaining weight?!?!

I just started at the gym this week. I'm 5'9 and am 171lbs. I thought it was time to start some real aerobics classes and shed the last 25lbs on me. Monday I did a spinning class, Tuesday was step class and yesterday was kickboxing. I worked out harder in my life this week than ever before and I'm loving it! I may go back to the gym on Saturday to just walk on the tredmill or do some weights. But I don't want to overdue it. I have been doing walking at home with the Leslie Sansone Walk Away the Pounds videos, but they were getting boring.

I weigh myself on Mondays and this Monday I was 171. I worked out so hard that I thought I would sneak a peak this morning and see where I was and the scale said 174?!!? I don't get it! Do you gain weight when you work out hard because that's the exact opposite of what I want to accomplish. I'm no where near my TOM, so I know it's not that. Thanks for your help on this!

HI and welcome.

It could be something that you ate.

It's okay to gain weight after working out. It doesn't mean that you look worse than you did when you started.

Muscle weighs more than fat. All that working out must've toned you up.

Great job!

I haven't been to the gym in almost 6 months now. My gained weight is definitely not from muscle, but fat. Be happy about the effort you are putting in. It takes a lot of emotional strength just to walk out the door and drive over to the gym.
