How to lose weight with a bad back

At 21 years old I've been diagnosed with a serious back injury. In order to help the pain I have to lose weight, but in order to lose weight I must exercise! Walking is sometimes painful and hardcore exercise DVDs that I used to love are out of the question.

Does anyone have any ideas for exercising/losing weight with back pain?

hello....I wonder how you would do with riding a recumbant bike? I use one because of my knees and ankles and its just less stress on my body alltogether. I love the high back also!

I wasn't sure what that was until I looked it up =) But I've seen those at my gym and I think you're right, that would put a lot less pressure on my spine than a traditional bike. I'm going to try it on Monday! Thanks for the suggestion!

I sure hope that works for you! Make sure to take a good book or magazine or an ipod just incase you get bored. I get so bored on a bike unless im actually outside riding!!!

Hi there,

I broke my lower back and pelvis 6 yrs ago when I was struck by a car and have suffered chronic back pain ever since.

Have you looked at any of these videos? They may be helpful if you're comfortable in a seated position: http://www.collagevideo.com/exercise-videos/seated-exercise-exercise-videos-47.

Hi! Just out of curiousity I asked our Health, Diet, and Wellness expert, Dr. Madelyn Fernstrom for some ideas and this is what she had to say:

Hope this helps.

P.S. How are you doing anyways?
