TGIF: Question of the Week (m)

What is your favorite name (either one you’ve read or made up yourself in one your stories) of a character?

Jessica Page Morrell said this about a character’s name:

“Give your characters interesting and memorable names. In Barbara Kingsolver’s “Prodigal Summer, the musical names that populate Zebulon Valley include Jewel, Lusa, Deanna, Cole, Big Rickie, Hannie-Mavis, Garnett Walker, Nannie Rawley…Your character names should like the place they come from.

So please share your favorite name with us.

Fat Hands! (m)

He is the miller in an 18c Cornish village to whom my heroine (in my historical tho apparently not a romance novel) is married briefly. He is truly unpleasant and I'm so proud of him. His real name is Hugh Runscombe. If he is some obscure facet of my personality I'm glad it's obscure. Comments from the other members in my crit group: "Fat Hands is a lecherous, drunk, narcoleptic, impotent, sadistic, premature ejaculator?" and "One of the most revolting characters I've ever come across."

Sloane...

It wasn't necessarily my favorite, but Sloane was the first that came to mind.

She was the character in a story I did as an exercize for this board. The character was a very withdrawn, sad creature who ended up committing suicide at the end of the story. I chose the name Sloane after playing around with sounds. The name "Sloane" sounded like "so alone."

I don't arbitrarily pick a name out of the had when I name a character (I understand some writers even use a baby naming book and choose a name they like) but there is a method to my madness, I put a great deal of thought into my characters names.

That name seems perfect for him! (m)

Will we have the pleasure (or is it displeasure? LOL) of reading about him, El? Do you have any parts of the novel you want feedback on?

Valuable Korner from Mother of Pearl (m)

is my favorite. It was a realistic choice for a young woman from Mississippi.

18 c misbehavior

Mac, I'm thinking of posting an excerpt here in the guise of a short story (no Fat Hands doing what he does so well, I'm sorry to say). It's long, and has some of that, er, nasty stuff that apparently the adult supervision at ivillage frowns upon.

I have been submitting this novel to a real live critique group I found thru the local branch of Romance Writers of America. Much fun, and they're very tolerant of the fact that I claim to be writing a romance and then break every rule of the genre. Well what are rules for.
