Troop suicide rate highest in nearly two decades

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- More U.S. soldiers committed suicide in 2007 than at any time since the first Gulf War, according to an Army study to be released Thursday. There were at least 115 suicides last year, or 18.8 for every 100,000 soldiers serving in the Army, said an Army official with access to the report. The military still is investigating another two possible suicides. The new figure is up from 102 in 2006.

"More U.S. soldiers committed suicide in 2007 than at any time since the first Gulf War"

I'm not sure this means much to me if your question is the "effectiveness" of the surge, and since you phrased it that way, that's how I am going to answer it.

Any time *since* the Gulf War?? Well, uh...weren't we not really engaged in massive combat *since* the first Gulf War?? So, uh, yeah, it would make sense to me that suicide rates would go up. Is it sad? Sure. Is it war? Absolutely.

It relates to the surge because the suicide rate went up when the surge began( if you read the whole article). I guess people are expendable all in the name of "war"? Rather heartless comment if you ask me!This is not just a war,it's a war predicated on a lie.

What do you want? Hugs and kisses? Flower power? War isn't pretty. I know that and I accept it. I understand that you don't. Different strokes. I suppose it begs the question though, especially since you INSIST on making this debate a personal attack...why stay in? At least as a commissioned officer YOUR husband isn't obligated to stay in. If ya'll feel the way you do, make a statement. Put your money where your mouth is. Stand for your convictions. Get out.

They also say that the rates are same the as for the same age groups for those not serving in the military.

I read that as well but the war does have some blame in the suicides taking place. I think we are

War isn't pretty and it doesn have a psychological impact on those who are participating.

So you think servicemen and women would be less likely to commit suicide over their spouse having an affair
