"Doesn't seem like there were very many presidents who served in wars"
You mean who served as CIC during a war? Or served with military service during war time? Because man, unless I've forgotten how to count, it seems like a LOT more presidents served their country during war time than no military experience at all.
And as for seeing combat making one part of the "real" military, well, I've already posted my thoughts on that.
When I have a choice between candidates for the Commander in Chief, I'm most certainly going to AT MINIMUM weigh the fact that one has military service over the other. I care far less about what they "did" in the service than I do that they served at all.
I understand that there are just some people that will never (ever) see it that way.
Here's an interesting comparison (for stats nerds, myself included) chart. Yes, the site is wikipedia, but look at the chart of Scholar Survey Results through the years. Compare to the list of No-Military Service Presidents.
"He has misspoken SO many times, said some things that were just ridiculous. I mean, nothing standing on its own that is huge or life-changing, but you put all these things together, and wow! If he was really capable of leading our nation, he wouldn't make these mistakes. He doesn't seem to have a clue."
Such as???
No offense, but this vague kind of stuff is EXACTLY what I hear from a lot of convinced Obama supporters. No proof, no data...just....fluff. I'm not doubting that McCain has misspoke in his career, he's human and makes mistakes. Just like Obama and Clinton. But you are saying he doesn't have a clue??? Really, you're going to need to convince/persuade me to believe that your opinion is based on some sort of fact.
"But a man who puts SO MUCH of his campaign on the fact that he knows so much about Iraq, so much about what's going on in the war and in the world - he shouldn't be making these mistakes."
John McCain again confused Shiites and Sunnis during today's Senate Armed Services hearing, undermining suggestions that the conflation is simply a "McCain moment."
In the past month, the veneer of Sen. John McCain's foreign policy expertise has been muddied by his repeated confusion of Sunnis and Shiites. During his Middle East tour, McCain repeatedly claimed that al-Qaida, a Sunni terrorist organization, was receiving funding and training from Shia Iran. Only later, after Sen. Joe Lieberman whispered a correction in his ear, did McCain acknowledge his error. Nevertheless, MCain has since repeated the mistake.

You put a lot of stock in the fact that McCain has served in a war.
