My answer may be somewhat self-serving, as a significant portion of my time, after each election, is spent educating the new members of Congress on the substance of the issues I work on.
>>>Its hard enough to do this, and get anything done, when there are 50 or so new Members in a term.
"Sounds like job security to me. I don't see what the big deal is. I mean if it's the job you're paid to do...just do it. Who cares how many you have to do it for?"
It is only a part of my job description, not the entirety, and I'm paid to do a much broader job, not just for the new Members, but for all Members.
>>Sounds like job security to me. I don't see what the big deal is. I mean if it's the job you're paid to do...just do it. Who cares how many you have to do it for?<<
I take it you aren't a teacher?
>>So what? I would rather someone only have a couple of years to screw everything up...than an endless amount of years. I understand these people are voted on 'by the people' but I also think that when the people only have the choice of Scumbag #1 -- who is a career politician versus Scumbag #2 -- who WANTS to be a career politician...there's not much of a choice there.<<
Having never voted for a "scumbag" in my recollection I guess maybe I'm just luckier than you.
Should have read your post and saved myself the typing.
Term limits have always struck me as the lazy way out of participation.
>>>I'm partiularly amused at conservatives pushing this issue -- I guess every once in a while the "let the will of the people decide" and "less government regulation" are really *not* important to them.<<<
How insightful.
I've never been much impressed with "fresh blood" as an argument.
I think that's a naive way of looking at things. But you're entitled to your opinion.
I believe otherwise.
"If you don't like 2 terms...then max it out at 4."
That's what I was thinking of when I voted "other". I would like to see term limits too, just perhaps not a 2 term limit. 4 or 5 terms seems plenty enough to get the job done.
Fair enough, I think the concept that "new is better" is naive in the extreme.
