Obama promises tuition help for college students

TAYLOR, Mich. (AP) — Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama recalled paying off his own mountain of student loan debt and promised struggling college students Tuesday he would help them pay for school.

Obama said he would give students a $4,000 tax credit to help pay tuition and fees in exchange for 100 hours of community service. The campaign said the program would cost $10 billion a year.

"You get a hand living your dreams, and then you help your fellow citizens live theirs," the Illinois senator told a small group of students in a courtyard at Wayne County Community College. He listened as they told stories of balancing family demands, high fuel prices and school costs.

The event combined a couple of campaign goals, stressing Obama's plans to help Americans struggling in a tough economy while showing voters in the critical swing state of Michigan more about his modest roots.

Michigan Republicans have been trying to portray him as an elite senator out of touch with the daily struggles in the state, which has the nation's highest unemployment rate. "His two biggest accomplishments in the U.S. Senate are becoming a millionaire and running for president," GOP Rep. Mike Rogers told reporters in a conference call as Obama began a two-day visit to the state.

I agree and I also have a problem with giving kids money for college.

My issue is there are people out there in the world that seem to think they can't go to college without a handout. My Sister has a Master's Degree.. but she got a bachelors degree while working nights at a grocery store. My Brother is a Chemical Process Engineer who worked his way through school while working PT at McDonald's.

Did they get Pell grants and/or guaranteed student loans? I couldn't have made it through college without handouts like these (which were a significant contribution to my costs). I've more than make up for it with my degrees and expertise in cutting edge technology field by paying taxes, repaying my loans, and making significant contributions in my field. Without these gov't handouts, I probably wouldn't have gone to college if I had to work in a grocery store nights or work pt at Micky Dees. I still don't multi-task very well.

Education is an investment that has long term benefits for a society. Checkout the results of the GI Bill post-WW2. Public school is a long accepted societal investment. In a global economy, additional education investment is a necessity if this country wants to keep up in this world.

I believe he said tax credit and not cash handout. I get a tax credit every year on the interest I pay on my student loans. He'll get the money by increasing taxes on big business. I believe he has
