WASHINGTON (Reuters) - In what likely is the last big showdown between President George W. Bush and congressional Democrats over the popular Medicare health care program, the U.S. Congress on Tuesday voted to override his veto of a bill to keep doctors' payments from being slashed.

By enacting the measure over Bush's objections, Congress rescinded an 11 percent reduction in government payments to doctors treating elderly Medicare patients.

Just hours after Bush vetoed the legislation, the Senate voted 70-26 to overturn him, following the House of Representatives, which voted 383-41 to override. The bill now becomes law.

Well good for them! Maybe this will help their 18% approval rating ;)

(ETA: in case someone doubts the Democratic Controlled congress actually has a lower approval rating than GWB, "The public's view of Congress is even worse. Its approval rating has hit a new low of just 18 percent, down from 23 percent last month, according to a new AP-Ipsos poll. Bush's approval is at 28 percent, about even with the 29 percent rating last month." http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080717/ap_on_go_pr_wh/pelosi_bush)

This just amused me.. Pelosi calling Bush a "total Failure" when the Democratic Controlled Congress has a lower approval rating than Bush does..

WASHINGTON - President Bush has been a "total failure" in everything from the economy to the war to energy policy, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Thursday. In an interview on CNN, the California Democrat was asked to respond to video of the president criticizing the Democratic-led Congress for heading into the final 26 days of the legislative session without having passed a single government spending bill.

Pelosi shot back in unusually personal terms.

"You know, God bless him, bless his heart, president of the United States, a total failure, losing all credibility with the American people on the economy, on the war, on energy, you name the subject," Pelosi replied. She then tsk-tsked Bush for "challenging Congress when we are trying to sweep up after his mess over and over and over again."

The whole kit-and-kaboodle has been a failure and a disappointment to the American public. Too bad we can't withhold their salaries for a job poorly done!

Even his staunchest supporters couldn't support this major debacle on the President's part.

"Too bad we can't withhold their salaries for a job poorly done!"

You know what? I agree 100%!! If politician's want to suggest pay for performance when it comes to teachers (not that I entirely disagree), then they ought to be held to the same standards!

You have the opportunity to fire your representative every 2 years.

I disagree with you, but I'm pretty sure

What gets me about it is Bush's reasoning for vetoing it! To give Seniors more choices??? Wasn't that his reasoning? Does he think we are stupid or something? To make deeper cuts for Dr.s is ridiculous. Why hurt the Dr.s? He just doesn't want to hurt Insurance companies.
