Obama shifts stance on offshore drilling

Senator Barack Obama has wavered in his position on offshore drilling, saying that he may be willing to compromise on the issue, the Associated Press reports. The presumed presidential candidate had previously announced his opposition to offshore drilling but said Friday he would consider supporting limited offshore drilling if that was the way to get policy enacted that promotes more fuel-efficient cars and the development of alternate energy sources.

With attack ads criticizing Obama’s aversion to the drilling even as gasoline prices rise to $4, Obama has reneged his opposition, hoping that a compromise could put an end to policy gridlock on energy issues. “My interest is in making sure we've got the kind of comprehensive energy policy that can bring down gas prices,” Obama said in an interview with the Palm Beach Post. “If, in order to get that passed, we have to compromise in terms of a careful, well thought-out drilling strategy that was carefully circumscribed to avoid significant environmental damage -- I don't want to be so rigid that we can't get something done.”

Oil and energy have been a hot debate topic the past several weeks, leading up to the five week Congressional hiatus coming up. Earlier House Leader Nancy Pelosi refused to cave in to pressure to allow a vote on offshore drilling. It is unclear how Obama’s recent switch in stance will affect the Congresswoman’s steadfastness.

“The Republicans and the oil companies have been really beating the drums on drilling,” Obama said in the Post interview. “And so we don't want gridlock. We want to get something done.”

I'm wondering what he is going to tell the extreme far left when they cry foul over this, like they cried foul when he "refined" his stance on Iraq. Perhaps he'll say he was against off shore drilling before he was for it :)

Really though- we need compromise, we need

Jen~ I have no problem with compromise. But really this is just showing that Obama's instincts aren't on the mark (he was opposed to the Surge, he's "changing his mind" about drilling). We need people willing to compromise...but I don't think that's more important than someone who's initial responses are on the right track without having to backtrack.

McCain has said that we'll be in Iraqi 100 years, then he said till 2013 , and now he has said there could be a 16 month time table for withdrawel. They both do it so neither is innocent.

Shouldn't he waver on his stance considering he now wants another stimulus package.. $1,000 (to every person or family?) paid for by the "windfall profits of big oil"?

Methinks what really happened is that he finally realized that the vast majority of Americans want to do something positive about energy costs and they want offshore drilling.

This article goes into a little more detail about the plan associated with offshore drilling. It may look like he's caving but there is a lot more to it than just drilling for more oil. Please read what he says about it and why he is shifting position before you make up your mind.

Quite honestly any politician that is for up for election this year knows they better be on board with this(IF THEY WANT TO GET ELECTED).

This is hotter than the downed "immigration" bill.

Just like John McCain

Both even politicians know we can't drill our way out of of this. Heck, even oilman Bush admitted that is a 2006 SOTU address:

"Keeping America competitive requires affordable energy. And here we have a serious problem: America is addicted to oil, which is often imported from unstable parts of the world."
