Do they both come from money?

No, but they are both well off. McCain is from a military family, but his current wife is an heiress worth $100 million. Obama grew up middle class, his wife working class, and they both worked their way up and into a comfortable living thru education (and lots of student loans).

Both are in the upper tax brackets, but I believe the McCains are way up their with all of their holdings, properties, etc.

((Obama grew up middle class))

Before Barack went to live with his Grandparents, he and his mother and baby sister were poor. His Mom applied for food stamps to feed them. She later returned to school for her PhD and sent Barack to live with his "middle class" Grandparents in Hawaii which had better schools.

LOL - I like how you went from A to Z with McCain and explained how the Obama's worked hard for their money.

I know only bits and pieces of the history of both and yes McCain did marry rich ... but he also served in the military which most know (esp back then) isn't a high paying job.

they've both done well for themselves, both worked hard ....

McCain wasn't nearly as well off financially before he married his second wife. He left his first wife and adopted kids. She had stuck with him through the time he was a POW; he left her after a crippling auto accident that took several inches off her height. A real family man.

It wasn't the war. He left his wife after she was disfigured.

I'm aware that there are many stresses on marriages. I just think it's a little odd that the party that supposedly has a lock on "family values" can't even find a presidential candidate that has some. I hate to say it's about character, but it's about character.

he left his wife after he came home from war, from being a POW.

You are correct. He was released in 1973, met his present wife in 1979, and was divorced in 1980 at his request. Apparently he had extramarital affairs dating from the time shortly after he returned from the war. I don't buy the argument that his behavior at that time is irrelevant or somehow not predictive of how he'd handle the tough demands of the presidency.

if you honestly have a hard time accepting how a POW handled his new marriage over 30 years ago

I can't "judge" his personal life either. But I do have to take his behavior into account when voting for the highest office in the land.

I thought the whole point of "family values" is that families stick together and support each other when times get tough. Are the rules are different for presidential candidates?
