Yesterday I had some free time for the first time in a very LONG time and I recalled fondly time spent on iV boards in the past so I decided to come on and join in.

I do agree with you that many people are just plain nasty to others.

I think much of it has to do with the anonymity of it all. Just like people are more disrespectful when driving as opposed to walking. Being in a website like this takes away the human aspect of it all. I'm sure that some people on this bored have people in their day to day life that they'd love to go off on but can't, so they take it out on the people here. I learned early on to not get worked up about what people on the internet say to me.

I think that first off, it's really hard to understand the "tone" of something being typed into a bulletin board, so in many instances, what a poster INTENDS to be a fairly benign argument against a position sounds much more personal that it would if the message was spoken with voice inflection. On this forum, the over all tone is MUCH, MUCH, MUCH more respectful than I have seen at other forums, so take my impressions with a grain of salt, because I have run into some seriously mean, nasty people on-line and these women here aren't (for the most part).

I don't know if you took issue with any of my posts, but I hope not as I really try not to debate the person, but to debate their position. I do sometimes tend to get sarcastic, but it isn't with mean intent, so please forgive my occasional lapses.

I have never noticed your tone to be nasty.

Another thing that happens here is that repeat posters begin to get to "know" each other.

I disagree with you, but I'm pretty sure

LOL, well, technically, neither do I - it just seems that every time I read one of your posts I'm like, yah, that's what I wanted to say... and we have children that are of similar age, and other things in common, lol.

No, I don't think I had a past life, though, hehe.

This is the very reason I don't participate much on these boards anymore.

you're right, halsgal. we tend to treat politics like a football game. go team, boo opponent.

unfortunately, part of it is modeled by the candidates themselves. a huge part of this is modeled by partisan commentators. that is the main reason that i feel opinion pieces don't have a role in this discussion - i want the facts, not a biased version of the facts.
