Promises, promises

We get so wrapped up in what the candidates say they will do, what they're plans are, but the reality is, most of what they promise isn't really going to happen. I find it interesting how we tend to push this aside as election politics get frenzied. This op-ed was penned during the primaries, but the premise holds.

I particularly like this section:

Cal: What many candidates don't, or won't, understand is that once they are in office, circumstances and their view of things might change. What sounds good in the campaign may not translate into policy inside the Oval Office. We have to allow for this reality. After all, our government was wisely designed with balances — via Congress and the courts — to ensure such difficulties. But politicians running for president know this, and so their campaign promises shouldn't be showered on voters like confetti at a political rally.

Bob: There are still plenty of days left between now and November. The nominees of both parties should remember that promises may get them elected, but broken promises might cut short their stay at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. Promises are too easy to make by politicians, too easily demanded by voters and too often unchallenged by the news media.
