A West Hollywood Halloween display showing a likeness of Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin hanging by a noose has caused a furor among some residents who reported it as a hate crime, authorities said Monday.

But Los Angeles County sheriff's officials said the mannequin sporting a beehive hairdo, glasses and a red coat does not rise to the level of a hate crime because it was part of a Halloween display.

Not to mention you notice how it's not been on the news? Just imagine what would have happened had it been a display with a noose around Barack Obama's neck? Both are equally tasteless.

He also had a likeness of McCain on fire in his chimney. I, too, dislike Sarah Palin but this is beyond offensive. And frankly, it's not funny at all. If he had put a noose around the neck of an Obama mannequin, people would be outraged and I think Sarah Palin deserves that same respect.

it's tasteless - and if it had been Obama, i suspect there would have been more police action applied against a racially-motivated hate message. i'm not sure why it's ok to show a woman as a victim - especially one that is clearly a specific woman.

I've seen it covered on both MSNBC and CNN. It was also discussed on The View this morning.

ETA: This video was on the front page of CNN.com covering this exact story. http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/politics/2008/10/27/sedens.ca.palin.noose.kcal

The drawback of living in this great nation is that people can be total a$$holes. The 'hanging in effigy or burning' has been a time honored stupid way to protest politics, by people of the same race. Guy Fawkes day comes to mind, as does the action of some of the Sons of Liberty.

It doesn't make it right. All of them, past and this one in the present, are stupid.

By the way, the hanging in effigy by opposite race has an entirely different connotation.

They should be made to take that down.

I, too, find it absolutely disgusting and in poor taste. But I am always hesitant as to what should be allowed and not allowed. I feel like it would have crossed the free speech line had it somehow been inciting violence, KWIM? I don't like it and I'm not saying that it's not hateful and pathetic, but I don't know if he should be forced to take it down.
