Can someone nicely tell me the reasons you support Obama?

I just can't figure it out...it SEEMS alot of people support him b/c he's the "popular" choice or because he's black. What is he going to do that benefits you?

Thanks in advance

I voted for Obama because I support his ideas on the following issues--economy, healthcare, education, women's and worker's rights, ending the war in Iraq, restoring our country's good standing in the world, and maintaining our civil rights, to name

I appreciate your reply mom2seamuss...

But I have a few questions-

Maintaining our civil rights? I thought his main thing was CHANGING our civil rights - like our Bill of Rights and the Constution? He himself has said that many times.

Lower taxes? Isn't he all-for increasing taxes to spread the wealth?

We don't depend on the government for our children's education, they go to a private school parttime and homeschool the rest...so that doesn't effect me.

And with his high taxes, small businesses - the backbone of America -will go under, so thats a lot of jobs gone, how is that beneficial?

restoring our country's good standing in the world - how in the world could he do that? N.Korea? the terrorists? those are problems waiting to happen and unless he's going to do what they want (no Democracy) they will always hate us.

what cant you figure out? that some peoples opinions differ from yours?

I am not voting for him based on it being the "popular" thing to do, nor his color. ( sometimes I feel like some are voting for McCain because of HIS color, I don't get that either...) When I saw him at the 2004 DNC my mother said to me to remember that name... we were extremely impressed by him.I couldn't agree with him more on the issues of a woman's right, the war in Iraq, the economy....

If you were really trying to understand, you would have tried much earlier than one day before the election.

On the issues, I am voting for Obama because I especially like his policies on education, healthcare, Iraq, women's rights, and gay rights. I am more neutral in my opinion of his economic policy. Off the issues, I generally like his style of thinking. It is very important to me to have a president that I perceive as extremely intelligent and capable of thinking about problems from multiple perspectives. I saw a great special on PBS that showcased positive attributes of both candidates and one of Obama's strong suits, according to people who know him, is his ability to find balance between different viewpoints. Republicans want to paint him as extremely liberal, but I think he seeks solutions that are more middle-ground and is quite open to conservative viewpoints. Friends who knew him at Harvard talked about how when he was elected President of the law review, the more liberal editors expected him to advance their agenda, and were disappointed that he was so balanced. An article here: http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0608/11257.html summarizes the basic points covered in the special. I also think that Obama's charisma counts for a lot. He makes people feel inspired and hopeful about out country's future. He is very popular outside the US, which I think will carry a lot of weight in restoring our nation's reputation.

I'll also add that during the primary season, I was pretty happy that McCain got the nomination, because during the 2000 election I lived in SC and I saw the awful things that Bush did to him during the primary. I really thought he would rise above negative campaign tactics because of his own experience as the victim of them. But he started to turn me off when he chose Palin as his running mate and when his campaign tactics turned so dirty. I'm a psychologist, and I know manipulation when I see it, on both sides. His tactics are very manipulative and negative, and that gives me a bad taste in my mouth. I've looked carefully into all of the accusations he's made of Obama and I truly think they have zero merit.

Then I guess its how you take what is said. you and I could listen to the same speech and we would hear it differently I guess. Neither wrong, neither right, just how its interpreted and believed by an individual.

Barack Obama has already helped my family out tremendously and I have ever confidence in the world that he will continue to help people like us once he is in the White House. Barack Obama is responsible for increasing VA benefits for Iraq and Afghanistan veterans. Because of him, my SO now has 100% covered health care for the next 5 years instead of 2. You would think that John McCain, being a veteran himself, would have supported such a measure, but he did not vote for the GI Bill.

As for the other reasons why I am voting for Barack Obama, they are numerous. I agree with him in re: to the economy, health care, the war in Iraq, women's rights, human rights in general, and I also agree that he will help to improve our standing in the rest of the world. He is articulate, intelligent and informed on the issues. I also appreciate his in-depth understanding of our Constitution. After 8 years of George W. Bush and his Administration, I will be truly thankful to have someone who understands and respects our Constitution be in the White House. I will also be thankful to have Barack Obama pick any outgoing Supreme Court Justices to balance out the nominees of Bush.
