Can someone explain to me how a State can vote for a man who stands for change and then turn around and deny a group of AMERICANS a basic right just because of who they happen to be? I thought people from California were a little more modern than they showed themselves to be Tuesday. Perhaps they would like to re -write the Bill of Rights. No more can people from the South or other rural areas of the US be labeled "Red Necks" that is now firmly secured in the State of California where they deny the right of someone to chose who they marry by only their gender. Don't bring up Religion. This is not the Middle East. We have separation of Church and State for a reason. The is absolutely no valid reason to deny this group the right to marry. Please tell me why you would deny two people who love each other that right? I would "love" to hear the reasons! They should take down the HOLLYWOOD sign and replace it with RED NECK WORLD
BY the way. I'm a happily married heterosexual male who has no problem with homosexuals/lesbians being married. It's THEIR business and no one else should be involved!

I totally agree, (well except I'm a happily married heterosexual female.)
I would LOVE to hear the reasons why some people think gay couples should not marry, and not bring up religion.
Ciao Jenny,
Yes I would like one non-religious reason why. To me this is the ultimate in ignorance. How can you pull the lever of Obama with one hand and the lever to vote for this bill with the other. You might was well put up the old "white" and "colored" served here signs they had in restaurants in the 40's and 50's. What is the difference?
The black and latino voters, who voted in high numbers in support of Obama, tipped the balance for Prop 8.
Anyone remember that this same group of voters are "credited" with getting Bush elected in '04 when gay marriage was on the ballot in Ohio. Jesse Jackson promptly scolded the lot of them, especially those in predominately black churches for hurting themselves by voting for something that was not "their issue."
I was very shocked that Prop 8 passed. I will say that it was much closer here in California that it was in some other states, and it was WAY closer than when they passed Prop 22 a few years ago, so that shows some progress. I don't think its so-called "rednecks" (unnecessarily insulting term BTW) that carried the vote though. I've heard rumors that the minority vote actually made the difference, although I haven't looked for any data to back that up yet. I find that very puzzling. I think a big problem is that proponents of Prop 8 tried to make it look like gay marriage would be an imposition on their religious freedoms, failing to mention that the courts already took measures to make sure that wouldn't happen. Now instead, the religious freedoms of those who feel gay marriage is OK are being squashed.
Italybiker, it has nothing to do with "rednecks"
If you look demographically, the black and latino communities tend to be less tolerant of homosexuals.
<<...precisely because people like you who supported Obama called them "rednecks". >>
LOL, I'm pretty sre Italybiker did NOT support Obama. He hates Obama's tax plan, just like you do.
Haha, i like the Red Neck world comment. Kind of funny. I'm a native Californian, and you would think I'd get offended but it takes more than that to ruffle my feathers.
When the higher courts get a hold of this, it will be overturned. In the meantime, I guess us Californian's will be rednecks. It's kind of cool for me to be an African American Red Neck, can i get a confederate flag license plate too (note the sarcasm)????
I need to step in
A question regarding "when the courts get ahold of it..."
My understanding (please correct me if I misunderstood) is that Prop 8 was actually an amendment to the CA constitution.
