Is there anything you'd like to see us do on the board differently or in addition to the activities we currently do?

The SSB Chat on Wednesday at 9 PM (Eastern Time) is one thing we've added in 2002. Please be sure to mark your calendars and join us.

Here's to making 2002 a wonderful year. TOAST!!!

Hi Mac (m)

Hi Mac, Here’s my two cents worth. First of all I think all you Cls are doing an outstanding job and I appreciate all you do for the board. Second I think it’s wonderful that you asked my opinion it makes me feel like I’m part of the board as all the writers here are and I hope that they will share their thoughts too.

Here goes, they say that variety is the spice of life, so....you have given us a variety now spice it up some, I’m a firm believer in spontaneity. Remember these are just suggestions take what you want and toss the rest away. How about rotating Thursday field trip with something else and Friday Funs. I like to be challenged and thought how about an open the envelope, inside would be a short exercise, say, write the funniest message you have ever heard on an answering machine, or what message would you like a telemarketing caller to hear. Or how about in a paragraph write what happens when your character is standing in line at the bank but it can’t be longer than ten lines.

Also I think that there should be two themes for the monthly exercise cause if one doesn’t spark an idea, thirty days is a long spell to wait for the next one and also if one gets the exercise finished early in the month if there was another the writer might do both. You’re probably saying that the writer can go back to a different months and do one of those but to me it just seems like I would be going backwards, I know I’m strange LOL I’m not saying this to take away from the Tuesday exercise which I love by the way but I just like to have an option . Does that make sense ? LOL

Thank you, Maria (m)

Your suggestions are great and I love the "open the envelope" idea. You bring up a good point about the monthly exercise theme and is something we need to think about doing.

As you said, this is "our" board and I encourage everyone to pitch in and tell us how we can make it even better place to hang out in 2002.

Many thanks,

Mac

Classics

I agree with Maria, the CLs on this board do a terrific job!

If you're looking for suggestions, however, the only thing I can think of is maybe discuss classic short stories and the authors of those stories.

Possibly have discussions on what makes those stories classics and the techniques and elements of style the writer used to tell the story.

Again, I think you all do a terrific job here and am looking forward to becoming more active again.

you CL's do a great job (m)

I'd suggest the main thing is to continue to keep us busy, which you seem to be doing. I don't think we need more than one writing exercise a month, but possibly an alternate topic would be good. I like the idea of having something I can work up over a month, and polish up some before I post it (or wait until 3 days before the end of the month and slap it up anyway). Also I wondered if anyone else would like more in-depth critique of these?

I think it's great that we have new faces here and I wondered whether it's kosher to invite people in from other boards. I think that we'll get exposure thru the chat, but it's important to get new people so that we don't tired of each other.

Since several of us are writing full length novels as well as short stories, I wondered if we could do something that integrates the two--possibly a future chat topic?

OK, enough from me.

Thanks maria (and mac, for asking!)(m)

I love the envelope idea, and I'd love to see two different themes per month we could pick from too. You had some great ideas last year. Any more?

Welcome back patty. (m)

This week in chat, we're going to discuss what makes a great short story. Maybe we could post the topic next day and throw the post open for follow-up discussion?

And every Tues., I'll be posting the topic for the following Wed. dicussion, so people can think about what they'd like to say, ask, etc.

It's been so long since I've read any of the classic short stories, if someone wanted to post a short story title each week, maybe title the post "Classic Short Story", we could discuss it under the post. (Would you like to do that? Hmmmm?)

Thanks for your ideas.

Heheheh, speak up there e.(m)

I'm all for have an alternate exercise topic each month. As for critiques, here's how I try to do them (and everyone is welcome to do nit pickier critiques as long as they are done with a certain "grace", if you know what I mean). If someone asks for nit picky feedback, I try to give it. Otherwise, if the story is well written, with maybe a weakness or two, I'll point those things out. If the writer seems to really be struggling with the story, I'll give a more in depth critique because those seem to me to be the ones who would benefit most from it.

Since I co-host two writing boards, and am helping out with a third one that doesn't have a cl right now, it's kind of hard to do nit-picky on everyone. But if you ask for it, I will try and I'm sure the others will too.

There's a board at the cl's cafe where cls can put promos for their boards and ask that others post them if interested. Also, periodically I put a notice at the Introduce Yourself board (hmmm, haven't done that in a while ... thanks for the reminder! I'll do that this week.)

Keep them good idee's a comin'!
