Drinking before 5pm.
| Sat, 01-21-2006 - 3:15pm |
I was reading through some of your posts and many of you mention that, although you drink/drank too much, you NEVER drank before 5pm.
What is the stigma attached to drinking before 5? Or weekends before 12noon. I was just pondering this and wondered why it worries people so much.
I have never understood the reasons behind this. Have you? I certainly isn't on any kind of "check" list for alcoholism. I just find it interesting.
What are your thoughts?

Your post caught my eye.
I have a friend who swears she doesn't have a drinking problem.
HI Lucky,
The clock doesn't understand alcoholism. My take is that most of us are gainfully employed and work 9-5 and most employers will give is the pink slip if we drink on the job. Many of us can contol the urge to drink during work hours and avoid trouble. I think there is an "old wives tale" that if we drink before noon that's a sure sign of trouble. But in reality if we wait until 1201PM, Saturday that doesn't mean squat, except maybe that we sleep too late fighting the hangover from Friday night. Stay safe, Lucky.

Well Lucky, good question. Here's my reason #1:If I drank before 5 pm, then you can bet your bottom dollar I would be drunk by 6. Heck, by 5! In my little body/life, it was a safer time for me to start drinking. That way if I was on a binge, then I could still be coherent enough to stay awake with my children. I have 3, and at the height of my drinking career, I would start at 5 and continue to 9 all the while consuming 6-12 drinks on a given night. Like I said, starting to early would be bad for everyone! Sometimes I would start at 7 pm, but mostly it was during the making of dinner. Alcoholics are creature's of habit. Change is good if it's consistent. So every day at 5 was a controlled environment for me. It kept me on schedule.
What else you got??? I like your questions!!!

Well......I admit I drank before 5 o'clock. Wait, is that am or pm...kidding. Like Paul said alcohol knows no time clock. More mornings than I care to remember I had to drink just to make it down the stairs and to start my day, or so I thought.
I think a lot of people think if they can wait until 5pm they surely don't have a drinking problem.
Still swimming................
Hope
there have been times when my childs been gone when I'd get off work at 3 pm and start drinking right away, with the idea that then I could pass out early enough to be in better shape for work the next day.
God, that does sound bad doesnt it?

Sometimes you fake it, till you can make it.

Well, we have ALL retionalized our drinking. I even rationalized just having an "eye opener" to get the day started, what can one bloody mary hurt huh? Then the whole bottle is gone by noon and I have to "nap" to sleep it off. But then it's evening and it's perfectly "normal" to have some wine while making dinner, right? It all sounder perfectly normal in my denying mind.
Don't beat yourself up, you can't go back but you surely can go forward..........
Take care,
Hope
I owned a watch with onlyy 5 on the face! LOL
People who work nights have a different time to drink.
I started after work... 2/3 am
