SUNDAY'S SURPRISE: Open The Envelope (m)

Although we're short story writers, this week let's "open the envelope" and try out hands at screenplay writing. Write the opening scene to your movie. Things to consider might be 1) What music is playing; 2) Where the scene takes place; 3) Is it daytime or at night; 4) Who’s in the scene; 5) What angle or POV is the camera using. Once you’ve got that add a little dialogue. The following link has lots of movie scripts so you can see what the format looks like:

The theme is up to you but please limit your scene to 1,000 words or less. Have fun,

Mac

Thanks, Eyewrite (m)

I was trying to be kind of weird and funny. I wanted it to have a Pulp Fiction sort of feelings to it. I've never tried shopping a script but there is this website (I'll find the name and post in later) that has a lot of helpful info about the subject.

Thanks again,

Mac

Unless the hubby's...

Articulate why it is or isn't a good idea, ALWAYS go with your gut. I think there is something in the MALE ego (even if the hubby is a good guy) that becomes threaten when they know the wife IS talented and potentially capable of LAUNCHING a career of her own. And I mean SUCCESSFUL, as just a slight more lean into your self-belief will show!!

Get those screen plays done, and I mean it. I little too harsh? OK, how about I believe in you!

Originally yet another start to the Jan. exercise, but turned into something quite different.

*********************

Credits roll as the camera pans over the interior of an old-fashioned train, its floor filthy with trash, heels of loaves, fruit rinds and many empty bottles that roll under the wooden seats. In one corner is a dangerous-looking woodstove. The train is loud and rickety, and puffs of smoke wafting outside and occasionally through the open windows reveal that it is a steam locomotive. It travels through a bleak mountainous desert landscape. ENRANI is asleep on one of the seats, dirty and unshaven, his head resting on a canvas bag.

ENRANI (voiceover): The further north we traveled, the fewer my companions became. They were returning to their families after long shifts in the southern mines, and I was going to the end of the line. According to the tall tales they told me, it was the end of the line in every way. My official briefing had not been much better. I didn't know what to expect.

Music starts: slow 5/4 and 7/8 time, wooden flute, percussion, nasal wordless female voice.

Fade to shot of train stopped at a station, a platform of sandstone, with a low building, apparently standing in the middle of the desert. There is a doorway with TWO GUARDS, armed with a large knife and a piece of wood studded with nails, lounging at its entrance. They are hooded, and we cannot see their faces. ENRANI opens the train door and steps down, pulling his bag with him. He pulls a packet of papers from an inside pocket. GUARD #1 takes the papers, flips through them, and hands them back carelessly so that they fall onto the ground. GUARD #2 pokes through ENRANI'S bag. All three of them pass through the doorway.

Fade music out.

Cut to other side of building. ENRANI walks towards camera, pulling his cloak over his head and across his mouth as dust and sand swirls around. The light is blinding. In the background the GUARDS watch him.

GUARD #1: Nice buns.

They both laugh.

Camera zooms in to show ENRANI'S appalled expression and then back to reveal that the GUARDS are middle-aged women.
