I particularly liked the exchange in the doctor's office. This was good, the characters' voices came through very well.

Ladies For A Better Society ...
oh hoh hoh, and off to bible class. But if the empty bottle of Viagra was found at the mayor's office, maybe there's even more scandalous activities going on at the city hall!
Funny!

THE GOSSIP
I tried to lean forward so I could hear what Mrs. Stevens was telling Evie Tyler, my hairdresser, about old Mr. Cawley. But her dryer was on and I only caught every other word or so.
"... running around ... that big blonde ... name is Elki ... you'd think she had him on a leash ..." She saw me trying to listen and just gave me a little wink.
"Oh, my," Evie said. "What on earth was he thinking, at his age!"
Evie was so busy gossiping with her, she backcombed my hair 'til I looked like I'd just had a run-in with the Monster of Muddy Marsh. "Dang, Evie," I said. "Watch it!"
"Sorry." She brushed my hair back and worked on it with one of those little pick things.
She finally finished and I got up to pay her, including the tip of course, and Mrs. Stevens just wiggled her fingers at me like we were old friends or something. Even though I barely knew her -- which is probably why she was telling her gossip to Evie instead of me.
I decided to stop in at the Goose Gathering cafe for coffee before I headed home. I ran into Edith Mansfield, and we got to talking. You know how it is. Well, she told me about her husband's second cousin's daughter running off to Kansas City with some construction worker, so I just had to tell her what I'd heard at the beauty shop.
"... and she said he was running around with some big blonde named Elki, that kept him on a leash. Then Evie said, What on earth was he thinking at his age ... Can you imagine?"
"Poor old thing," Edith said. "Every since his Mae died, he's been at loose ends. Maybe he's just lonesome. It does make a man do crazy things. Or maybe he's trying to fool himself about his age. He's not at all in good health, you know."
"Be a shame if she wore him out and wound up with all his money after him and Mae being married nearly fifty years."
"What money? All he's got is that house and his pension. If she's after money, she's gonna be disappointed for sure."
"Well, if you ask me, he'll get what he deserves running around with some floozie at his age --"
"Shhhush, here he comes."
About that time I saw Mr. Cawley come walking across the street toward the cafe. I should say running across the street, or maybe dragged. He was being pulled along by this big yellow retriever. He stopped in front of the cafe and hooked the dog's leash around the lamp post.
I heard Edith snort and laugh when he opened the door, turned back to that dog, and said, "Stay Elke. Good girl."
Well if I didn't feel like a fool, especially in front of Edith. But listen. Maggie Henry was just by, and you'll never guess what she was telling me about Bertha Goodman ...

Powerful little story sammi.(m)
Maybe I misread it, but why did she refer to her sister as a bitch when she was getting ready to enter the cafe and saw that she and her husband were there?
Very painful but nervy story.
