Patty...

Well I tend to stay alway from all Nuts to play it safe! The strange thing is I can use Almond extract inb cooking and that doesn't bother me.

A peanut allergy is one of the most common food allergies because the peanut proteins can act as powerful allergens, even in tiny amounts.

If you would like more info let me know I have a bunch!

Like Jade said...

Peanuts, in any form (oils, butter, roasted, in dessert, chopped, whatever) cause the reaction. I'm sure it's the proteins as I've had an identical reaction from a type of protein powder. Peanuts contain so many proteins that I haven't been able to tell which one (or more) is the culprit. Maybe Jade knows.

Like Jade, I stay away from all nuts in any form just in case. If you had to be rushed to emergency from ingesting or inhaling one, you'd be careful too.

This means that I avoid dessert when eating out because it's too risky. A knife used to slice a cake with nuts in it could be not rinsed off well enough and then used to cut the non-nut dessert and the residue would be enough to cause a reaction.

We discovered my allergy when I was in preschool, making birdfeeders. Little kids + milk cartons + peanut butter + birdseed = my face so swollen you couldn't see my eyes. Until that time my folks had never heard of such a thing. They thought "all kids like peanut butter" so when mom make me a PB sandwich and I'd hold my tummy and groan on the bathroom floor, mom thought I was being silly.

In university when it was my turn to wash the dishes and my roomates had some peanut butter left on a knife, I had to be rushed to hospital and given ventolin (sp) so I could breath again.

At least I can avoid my allergen nearly 100%, unlike people allergic to pollen or dust.

you just named me to a T ....Eyewrite

Nut are the only food allergy I have but the pollen, dust, smoke. I have a full file cabinet drawer at the dr's just for my files dealing with that.

On top of that Asthma doesn't help!

Suggestion

One of you (or both) should write an article on this. You could co-author the article, use your own experiences as examples, interview an allergist, etc... I bet it would sell.

Hmmm....

Patty,

You think there's room for yet another article/story on nut allergies? It seems to be in the news at least once a week... I remember in the 80s how stories were popping up all the time on accidental deaths from eating apple turnovers with some nut residues from some fast food chain. And now many (most?) preschools and kindergartens and perhaps entire elementary schools have peanut free-rules, because at least one kid has a peanut allergy. A few schools are becoming "scent-free" too - no perfume, cologne, hairspray, frangranced deodorant/antiperperant.

I'll look into it.

Guess I Need To Get Out More

Unless one of those kids had been eaten by a nut I wouldn't have heard about it. I'm afraid I don't read much health or education news. But thank goodness I have the Short Story Basics Friday Fives to keep me informed. Seriously, I do learn a lot from these and I definately learned something today!

Thanks,

Patty

My Five (m)

1) What makes your skin crawl?

When someone blows their nose at the table definitely makes my skin crawl. I want to shout, “Go to the darn bathroom and do that instead of ruining another person’s meal.”

2) Which do you like better: peanuts in the shell, lightly roasted and salted, or chocolate covered?

I love peanuts, especially if they’re chocolate covered!

3) When’s the last time you threw something at somebody?

This week. We like to play basketball (a mini indoor version, of course) with the dogs. There’s a basket in the living room where we keep all the toys and usually once a night we’ll enjoy a game of ball.

4) Do you have a favorite piece of jewelry?

Yes, I have a black onyx ring that I wear quite often. It resembles a “mood ring” and is very casual plus I wear a lot of black so I tend to pick it out of my ring selection when getting dressed.

5) If you won a one-month writing fellowship, would you be able to go?

Probably not because my hubby would complain too much if I left for a month. But if I were single (and petless-LOL), I’d jump on it in a heartbeat.

Thanks for the info (m)

I’m allergic (though not as severe as you and eyewrite) to mushrooms and to shrimp so I can somewhat relate. Thanks for sharing. Who knows you may have saved a life today with your stories!!!

Hugs,

Mac
