Sunday's Surprise: Open the Envelope (m)

Write a short story (500 words or less) where a message received affects the main character. Open your mind and be creative because messages can be sent in many forms.

Happy writing,

Mac

hope this helps...

About the note on the door. She gives you a hint of what it says.

There on the door was a message taped, I took it off and read it. I had to laugh, if he had only known how my day went.

I had hope that it would come across as... Hope you had a great day at work?

Oh well,

I will include more next story.

Thanks for pointing that out Maria :)

Why can't my days end like that? (m)

When she heard that thump upstairs, I thought oh no, a burgular's in the house. Nice twist with the hubby in bed with roses and all.

I loved the end!!!

Mac

PS...I know we don't usually critique our Tiny Tuesday's and Sunday Surprises, but I thought I'd mention this in case you expand this one into a longer piece. The sentence "There on the door..." might read smoother as "Taped on the door was a message that I took off and read."

The extent of my farming knowledge (m)

is displayed in this story. We don't have what I consider a real farm because we don't have any farm animals (except for the deer that I've adopted...lol). But my husband does have to cut the pastures several times a year.

Thank you for your wonderful comments,

Mac

I'm happy you found us again (m)

I've had the same thing happen when the board archives. I think it's something to do with the computer's brower (but I'm no computer wiz). In the future, if you notice the board being slow or no activity, hit your refresh/reload button and see if it'll take you to the new board.

Thank you for sharing your parents real life version of this. Your mom must of been moved by your dad doing that.

I think you're right (m)

Being alone like that for hours at a time gives a person plenty of room to get one with nature.

Hope you're having a good Monday, eyewrite!

Hi, ok, I've got one....

The Dream

There was a cool breeze gently swaying the sheers she had hanging on her open window, which allowed the freshness of the spring morning to awaken her feeling refreshed. She slept soundly, probably for the first time in months. Her nights had been feverishly controlled by restlessness and uneasiness. The last few months have been the hardest for her, since her father died. She felt so alone without him. She had lost her best friend. She felt a loneliness she never could have imagined existed. She cried herself to sleep every night, and woke each morn feeling the heaviness of the new day, and the lackluster ambivalence that awaited her.

However this particular morning, there was a genuine newness to the day. She lay in her bed, and reminisced of the night before. Was it a dream, or did it really happen.

Her father was there. He came to her in her dreams. He was standing there, so tall and proud, and did not, for one minute look like he had been sick. His laughter was jolly, and echoed throughout the chambers. She stood in awe, was this man her father, or was she imagining things.

“Hi babe”, he said, responding to her thoughts.

“Dad, is it you? Really?”, she asked, with tears streaming down her cheeks.

“Yes, it’s me.” He replied as he reached out and wiped her tears away. “I requested permission to come to you in your dreams, to let you know how much better I am doing now, and to put your mind at ease. You see, Babe, I will never be gone totally. My body has passed, but my spirit will live on forever. The spirit can never die. I will always live on in your heart and in your memories. So, please, don’t think you’ve lost me, because you haven’t. I’m still here. Not the way you would like, because to all things there’s a season. It was time for me to go.” He reached out to her, caressed her chin, than stroked her hair.

He took her hand, and when she looked up, they were walking on the beach, their bare feet wading in the ocean waves. The two of them quietly strolled down the coast, breathing in every moment they were being allowed. She couldn’t have asked for a better moment in time with her father.

“Dad, I love you.” “And I love you too, Babe.”

She sat up, deciding to take the day, and as she got out of bed, she noticed there was a seashell sitting on her nightstand, which had not been there the day before. She looked at this shell with amazement. It was from her dad.

How sweet! ...

That sounds like a message to me. It must be reassuring to hear that Dad is doing much better - it's not good to suffer for a long time here on earth.

Mmm, seashell, maybe it even smelled like the sea, like it had been plucked a few hours before...

Take care,
