Your son sounds so much like my Dave. I am waiting right now for his transition meeting to go to kindie next year. He does have a PDD-NOS diagnosis along with an ADHD one. However, the school still doesn't feel he needs that intensive of services. They have said here in cali and many other districts, that despite diagnosis you have to show educational need.
Dave is able to hold it together most school days as well. He does have some trouble but not quite to the level of at home most of the time. But it is getting more and more telling me that by the time he is in K 5 days a week or full days of school it will definitely be a problem.
Right now we are fighting the SI fight again. Over a year ago the OT determined that his SID wasn't affecting him at school so he didn't qualify. Total balogna, but I had bigger fish to fry at that time and didn't want to deal with her. I did what I could at home. Now it is affecting him more at school, so I have asked again for another SI eval and was just told yesterday that one was just done (nearly 1 1/2 years ago) and it didn't affect him educationally so she wouldn't be doing another. So off I go to fight the fight.
Also despite most people still not understanding him and talking REALLY funny, he graduated from speech. I was told that in speech he has all the neccessary sounds for his age. He is missing sounds that aren't addressed yet and as such it is hard to understand him. He will need speech again in a year or so because he won't pick up the sounds naturally, but they won't address them now.
I am there with you. It is very frustrating over all with these kids on the edge in preschool. However, at least Dave qualifies and I have been able to get him the help he needs or have been able to do it myself. At his age, Mike didn't qualify despite having severe behavioral, social and sensory needs. At that time if you didn't have cognitive or language delays you didn't qualify. Now 5 years later he is in a special day class with a 1:1 and I wonder what would have been different if he had earlier intervention.
I had the same issue until I took the DX criteria with me to the Drs apt, at that point we went through it and it was pretty
Hi Bari,
"Good" to see you over here. Actually, I'm sorry you're here and sorry that you are getting frustrated with the whole enchilada. I know the feeling.
My guess is that the developmentalist isn't qualified or permitted to actually diagnose -- or isn't sure -- so she's dancing around a bit.
Do you think that having the PDD dx. would help you get more services?
Take care,
Cathy (Jack Attack, 3.10 months PDD-NOS)
Unfortunately, in my district, the dx would get my ds more services.
Bari,
