We are really confused by the diagnoses that our DS has been given. We had a developmental ped. tell us that he was delayed or immature, a neurologist tell us that he was severely ADHD, and a psych. tell us that he was PDD-NOS. I don't know if we are in the right spot or not, but how do you get the kids the interventions and supports that they need when you can't even get a set of concuring diagnoses?
DS has always been different from other kids. He walked at 71/2 months, talked full sentences at a year old, etc. My problem with him seems to be that he is more independent than he should be at his age. He was known to wander off when he was younger. He worries constanly about bad things happening to him or the ones that he is close to. He has some sensory issues with noise and tags in his cloths, and he doesn't like to wear his shoes, but in the summer, he wiil not walk on the grass without socks on. I can't tell you how many pairs of socks that I have to buy, LOL!!! He lines his toys in formations, doesn't seem to get idioms or some jokes....And he gets out of hand when we are out.
I don't see the reckless behavior that goes along with the ADHD. He is normally very quiet and likes to be by himself. He has never really played with his toys, although he does manage to destroy a lot of them. The only thing he really plays is baseball.
What the heck makes the difference? We are really confused here.
Thanks in advance.

PDD and ADHD and SID often seem to go hand-in-hand. It's not uncommon for a child to have all 3.
My son that was diagnosed PDD was also diagnosed severe ADHD, and he has severe problems with SID also, and other problems, such as learning to read and write, and comprehension problems.
If your son is "quiet" and "not reckless", maybe he just has the innattentive type of ADD?
Everything you typed about your son also fits my son perfectly, except that my son is not quiet and is very reckless!
I don't think that he has the ADHD though. The neuro said it was the combined type, but if you ask him what happens at school when he is distracted, he will tell you that it isn't other visual things or noises, it is his own thoughts. Which I understand to be an AS trait? I personally don't think that the doctor could see past the ADHD. She didn't even want to hear anything that I had to say about his behavior. The hyperactivity only comes out when he is anxious or in small places, which this room was. Not to mention the fact that his day was not a normal one. Sigh....
He did have trouble learning to read. He is still behind in that aspect. It is very choppy and labored. He can't seem to relate the sounds to the letters. Yet on his testing it shows that he has mastered the phonics portion.? And his comprehension is terrible. In school they have open book tests in reading and they are to look at the board for the pages to refer to for the answers. He never does this, or he says that he can't find the answer on the page.
Thanks for the response though. Very confusing...wish I had some answers....
