Hi Larie,

My son Robbie has similar issues and a recent PDD-NOS diagnosis. He's almost 5 - we're gearing up for kindergarten next year! (yikes!)

Anyway, one of the books I found most helpful is called Austim Spectrum Disorders (with a very long subtitle). It's by Chantal Sicile-Kira. Not only did I like what I read, I ended up with a very long list of websites to check out afterwards. Also, I'm working my way slowly through The Child with Special Needs, by Drs. Greenspan and Wieder. It's about the floortime approach.

Also, in case you're interested, I have a tip about sharing this information with others. For books that we buy, I read through with a highlighter. DH and assorted grandparents really found that helpful so they could focus on only the relevant information.

Hope this helps,
Maribeth

Hi Larie,

I just wanted to welcome you to the board. My son was dx'd HFA last year, he's 6yrs old, in kindergarten, and his main issues are speech and social skills too. I ran into the same problem that you did...some of the info helped, but then some of it didn't even apply to him! I mostly just scan thru books and I'm on the computer alot just looking info up that can help. It is time consuming, but this board has really helped too. If you have any questions or concerns, or just want to vent....feel free to do so!!! There are alot of great mom's here who are going thru the same things and they give great advice!!!

Hi and welcome.

My DS is 3.10 years (he's a Jack too) and he is PDD-NOS.

A book I really like, though not specifically about PDD-NOS is "Quirky Kids." It's written by 2 pediatricians. It helped me figure out how to go about living with and raising a child with special needs.

Good luck to you!

I second "Quirky Kids" by Drs. Klass and Costello. It is full of very practical advice on the sort of nitty gritty things that don't even occur to other authors. Example: it gives advice on how to help an adolescent daughter with sensory issues deal with menstruation (one of those practical things others don't talk about.) Its main slant is how to deal with mundanities of day-to-day living when your kid is "quirky".
