Yesterday my ds autism teacher called me. She wanted to tell me she thought ds was having seizures. This is what happens..he gets and "ora: where he will act really silly. then he will totally zone out-staring-you call his name,-he doesnt respond, you say it againg he doesnt respond -you have to touch him to get him to come out of it. Well yesterday this happened and when he come out of it he siad "I hate when that happens" -his teacher asked what he meant-he said it didnt mater what he was doing every once in a while he zones out. She suggested that I take him to a neuro? what do you think? could these be seizures? He is on resperdol -which that is a side effect-he did this before he started taking it but they happen more often now.

Thanks in advance!!

I would at least check into it. You don't know. Now, my understanding is that kids who are seizing won't respond when touched however, absence seizures are pretty short in duration so perhaps about the time she is touching him he is coming out of it anyway. Also, could be partials which are so varied it is incredible, but the one constant is the person doesn't loose conscienceness or awareness. However, the symptoms are very varied. It just means that a seizure is happening in part of the brain and not generalized as in affecting the whole brain.

Absence seizures as well as grand mal seizures are generalized seizures that affect the whole brain and level of awareness (I believe, but I am not an expert)

My biggest concern would be the med. If it is happening more often since going on the med and it is a side effect, then you need to report it to the perscribing physician and make an appt with a neuro. Problem is unless he is having definite clinical seizures it can take a while to get into see a neuro so you need to report this to the perscribing physician. Also, start making notes of everytime this happens so you have data to go back and look at.

Risperadol has a significant amount of side effects. If he is showing any kind of difference in behavior like that I would really check into it. Is he showing any abnormal movements like tics? One of the biggest neuro side effects of risperadol is tardive diskonesia. I would just be concerned that if he is showing some neuro differences with the med that this is more possible.
