Are there any moms here whose child has NLD? Do you have any links that you can give me on NLD? TYIA

The 2004 IDEA, special education law, goes into effect on July 1, 2005. Do you know how and if this will affect your child?

I looked into NLD for Mike at first so I know where some links are. There are a ton at the OASIS asperger website. and some others are
http://www.nldline.com/
http://www.nldontheweb.org/
Also, there used to be a mom on the IEP board and LD board on PP who had a teenage son with NLD. She knew tons. I don't know why her name is escaping me now. Begins with an M.

Isn't AS a form of a NLD? When I was doing research I started with NLD and found AS on the site.

Yes and no, depends on who you talk to, lol.
Some researchers are trying to say that AS is more related to NLD than to autism and is not an autism spectrum disorder. Other's say AS is on the autism spectrum. Some kids with Asperger's can be more socially withdrawn and have more social trouble than those with classic autism actually. It really depends on what they are calling AS. For instance, taking into consideration the criteria used to describe AS by those who believe that AS is a form on NLD, my kids would be diagnosed as autistic and not Aspergers. Some (not all) AS kids can have similar make ups as kids with NLD adn even meet the criteria of NLD. My neuro said she basically thinks NLD is just Asperger's Lite. I don't know how accurate that is but that is her oppinion.
NLD as far as I know is more an educational classification. I don't believe, though I could be wrong, that there is a listing in the DSM or ICD-10 for NLD. Doesn't mean it isn't a diagnosis or that it won't be in teh next one, but I am not sure it is a medical or neuro-psychiatric type diagnosis. FOr instance, hyperlexia is not a medical diagnosis it is a speech/language diagnosis.
Currently what I have found most on this topic of AS as an NLD comes from I believe the YALE child study center. I couldn't find the link last time I looked.
Honestly, I think autism is a spectrum disorder truly. I would love for the subclassifications to be done away with and for the whole thing to be simplified. There is no way to be exact on it because there would be way to many subclassifications to make any sense.
Did that make ANY sense, lol.
