We know that Maya has PDD but, it is her big brother Nate that is having me a little worried. I could be totally blowing this out of proprtion but, he is really starting to scare me. We is doing a lit of hand flapping and, self stim plus, his intersts are very narrow to sports and, movies. We went to see a movie and, a preview came on for a diff movie and, guess what, ha knew that date that the movie was coming to theaters. He really doesn't watch much tv and, He really only watches sports so, he can get the moves of the sports players down. THere are many more things like, covering his ears and, telling us we are too loud that makes me a little nervouse.THe thing is though unlike his siter he has a wonderful vocabulary. I also forgot to tell you he licks people and, when he gets in a room full of people he covers his eyes and, won't look. And, he growls at people.
His ped has reffered us to a neurologist because of a totally dif reason. He has been having badd headache. I have not mentioned this to his doc but, mayby I should to the neuro.

Hi Nate's Mom,

I would def. use the opp. to mention your concerns to the neuro. Nate does have some sensory issues, it sounds like. While things like hand flapping CAN be red flags, I know that some typical kids can do it as well.

Good luck,

My advice to you would be to get him tested!! Does your school dist do thorough pre-school screening? We are 6 weeks into our daughter's dx, and she just started week 5 of school. I knew that she wasn't "right" from approx. 2 weeks old, but didn't do anything til now. The sooner you dx the sooner you can tx. My daughter has a tough time with basically any "excess" stimulation. She won't go to in unfamiliar places (houses or any other building) and can only handle 10 minutes in a store. That makes socializing and basic recreation out of the question. Vacations? Parties?

She was cleaning up blocks the other day and would cover her ears as she threw the blocks in the bin. There are so many things that we ignored or talked ourselves out of... My MIL still insists she is just fine and won't listen to anything we have to say about her. My mom tries to understand, but just doesn't get it.

You are probably not blowing this out of proportion. And if you are, better safe than sorry!!

Good luck,
Julie

I would definitely mention this to the neurologist. I do think you are right to be concerned and that you are not blowing this out of proportion. It sounds like he at least has some sensory issues. The stims, licking, and growling could all possibly be ASD signs, or something else. How does he interact with other children, at least in small groups?

You probably already thought of this, but when you talk to the neuro, be sure you mention about Maya too (if you are going to someone different than the Dan Marino doc who saw Maya.)

Good luck. I know this is hard, especially with everything going on with Maya and the insurance etc.

Take care,
Katherine
