PPD NOS Diagnosis I think

Hi to all, I've never lurked or posted here before. Our daughter is almost six and we'd just come to accept she doesn't have a diagnosis but we saw a new ped yesterday and in her opinion too much eye contact and language for autism dx but not high enough for Aspergers she felt Laura should be considered PPD NOS. I have an appointment next week with a peds neuro to confirm this opinion. It seems a very subjective thing do you guys feel certain of your diagnosis. Does this label mean Laura would benefit from the traditional therapy for Autism like ABA or TEACCH? Will it change her placement at school right now she's in a reg classroom and gets speech three times a week?
Anyway this is all so new to try to absorb and it doesn't feel real. Any input you have is appreciated. Thanks
Edie

Hi Edie,
Welcome over here. But hey -- wait a minute! You're not gonna' try and deprive me of chocolate or anything on this board are you? ;)
My Jack has a PDD-NOS dx. (He's 3.11 years.) He gets 25 hours of ABA a week. The dx. is fluid -- if at some point his language would catch up, he'd probably be Aspergers. The fact that Laura has a speech delay eliminates the possibility of an Aspergers dx. by definition at this point.
Yes, I am pretty sure of the dx now. Jack has big sensory issues (sensory seeking behaviors like toe-walking and hand flapping) so I hoped that it was just SID. But I eventually came around to the fact that it seems to be neurological -- he's wired differently. PDD-NOS is just a catch-all -- the "Not Otherwise Specified" only means that the child doesn't fit any of the other autistic spectrum disorder classifications exactly. I know the "Pervasive" word is scary but it just refers to the fact that the delays associated with the disorder have "pervaded" the child's other areas of development.
Hang in there, I know it's all new and a lot to absorb...
Cathy
Hi Cathy It's good to "hear" a familiar face. I'm really feeling drained I don't know if it's from all this new round of appointments and diagnostic possibilities or the extra running today but I'm looking forward to exploring this new world with some old friends. I'm certainly off the no chocolate thing although I don't think I've had any for awhile. We are however heavy into a mini diet support exercise better health thing. Want to join? or are you already doing thiat with us? I really am brain dead right now.
Our next appointment is June 10th. I'll be reading and thinking about questions I need to ask. If you've got any good ones let me know.
