We are finally getting Weston's eval

The psychologist that will be handling his case called. Because they don't want us to have to wait they're going to conduct his home visit and evaluation in June, but this means that they will not be able to observe him at school (which is his most difficult setting). She did ask if he was doing any thing this summer w/ peers in any kind of structured setting. I think she's going to observe him at VBS. I'm sort of torn on this. He has some very helpful friends at church. I'm afraid this might hurt him-- he may do too well in this setting. Then that same week they'll do a observation and questions at our home. Also after this observation/appt we have 2 months to fill out our paperwork and the school will have the same. I need to be sure that Weston's teacher from this year gets this done because we have been informed that they will close the case if it's not done in their time frame-- HOW FRUSTRATING that they waited until now to get us to the top of the list! After all this is done we'll be on the waiting list for the developmental ped.

Betsy,

Good luck on the home visit and eval. I was worried when the school district went to observe Nathan at his preschool. I was sure he would be on his best behavior and not show any quirkiness!! But Nathan wasn't able to hide his tendencies....they knew what to look for!! Of course, they still couldn't agree as to whether or not he was on the spectrum!!! LOL When I went to have him evaluated at the school district, I watched "them" watch "him". They were so focused on him and everything he would do, the way he would act...everything. They pointed out things that I hadn't even thought of!!!

Nathan does real well with adults too, so that worried me, as well. Especially when he saw the neuropsychologist. But this dr was real good! He and his colleague observed Nathan for, I believe, 4hrs. Just one-on-one. It was real tiring for Nathan, but I'm glad they did this. They were able to see the real Nathan. Best of luck.

Betsy,

I am glad you are finally getting things moving for Weston. That can be so frustrating. I hope the eval turns out to be very thorough and good despite all the fears. At least it will start soon. Is it through the district our your insurance? If it is through the district perhaps they can do an addendum or one last observation during school next year since you most likely won't get the results until after the new school year starts anyway.

Good luck.

the eval. is being done by the autism division of the state human services-- we're paying for it w/ our insurance(but from my understanding what the insurance doesn't cover is picked up by the state if he qualifies for services-- but I'm not really clear on that point) but it's not like we can control when they do these observations-- it's to see if he qualifies for services through the county or state disibilities board.

frustrating! The developmental ped is hard to get into-- if we went about this privately it would be approximately 3 month wait. Through the state they will do all the preliminary stuff first and then we'll have a 3-6 month wait for the same developmental ped, but we're trying to do two things at once-- because some of this would have to be done twice if we did the eval privately and then tried to get services.

I'm having a really hard time understanding all the rigamaroll! I need to have everything spelled out to me in black and white-- I hate when they tell me stuff verbally and then I don't have time to write it all out.
