Hi Tina!

Welcome to the board! My ds, Nathan, is 6yrs old and dx'd HFA last year. This is a great board to get advice or to just vent and make some friends. The best advice I can give is to start with early intervention....but it seems like you're on the right track already! Patience and knowledge are always good things to have as well!! Glad to have here!!

Welcome to the group! I do not have any specific advice for you, since it seems like you are doing the right things. I just encourage you to take advantage of every class and service you can get through Early Intervension- and don't be afraid to push for something if you think your son needs it. At such a young age there is a huge impact you can make on your son's future.

Hi Tina.. I have been lurking here for awhile.. but your post caught my eye, so I thought it might be the right time to delurk. I also live in PA, I have a quirky son who most likely has Aspergers (docs don't completely agree), and I have some experience working with our local IU (intermediate unit).

My son is older (6) than yours, and has been receiving services through the IU for about 2 years. For some reason I was very skeptical about them.. but the evaluations seemed very accurate.. and the therapies that he has been receiving have made a huge difference in our lives. For the past 2 years Ryan had received 1 hr of PT and OT each week (due to fine and gross motor delays), 45 minutes of speech, and 30 minutes of developmental (social skills). He has come a long way in these past 2 years. He will be going to kindergarten in the fall, with an IEP, and that will be big transition for him.. but I am very proud of him for what he has accomplished. I should probably post under the "getting to know you" section with more info on my guy.

Your son sounds a little like mine.. especially at that age. When DS was evaluated.. the IU therapists were also amazed at his knowledge of letters, numbers, shapes, etc. but transitions and a need for structure was and has always been his problem. Like you said, though.. the IU people don't diagnose or label.. they just recommend therapy based on their evaluations. We were extremely lucky to get really upbeat, enthusiastic therapists who really "got" Ryan and his quirks. He had/has a lot of sensory issues.. and getting them under control has been very important to his progress. DH and I talked alot with the therapists.. and keeping this open communication helped us understand what they were doing and why. Good luck.
