We are finally getting in to see the Developmental Pediatrician for my DS on Friday. He is 34 months and getting ST once a week, OT once a week and Special Instruction twice a week. In the past 3 months he has made great progress, with language, normal eye contact, constant interaction and he is finally starting to talk (yea! I bet you Mommys out there with late talkers all know just how wonderful THAT is).
He's testing at 26 months for receptive language (would have been higher, but action words continue to elude him a little), and 23 months for expressive. He is extremely visual. If he can look at it, he can learn it. I suspect that he has managed to teach himself how to read some words, especially the cereal box and the specific PECS cards that we frequently use (Stop, Wait, etc).
So my question to you ladies who have been around this a few times is...at this first appointment...what sort of questions should I ask, what sort of things should I bring? What should I expect? In the literature I got, I was told to expect the appointment to last about 2 hours. Does that seem short/long to any of you? I was also told to bring brief summaries from each of his therapists about recent progress/concerns that they have.
Any advice/input that you can give is really welcome. We are preparing for our first IEP at the end of July to get us ready for preschool, too.
Thanks so much. This board is such a wonderous asset!
